Currency – a festival of experimental European performance at The Place
Currency was an annual festival of experimental European work that blurs the borders between dance, performance art and contemporary circus.
The Place and Crying Out Loud, with the support of EUNIC London and the European Commission in London, have teamed up to create a festival of fresh-thinking from the edges of European performance.
Currency 2015
From 4 – 11 November 2015 Currency festival showcased European experimental performance that defies easy categorisation. The 2015 edition saw the launch of Currency TV which broadcasted the performances on the night interspliced with extra content from participating companies.

Taking part in this year’s festival are: Matt Pang (UK), Anders Duckworth (UK) Defracto (France), Natalie Reckert (Germany), Alex Deutinger & Alexander Gottfarb (Austria & Sweden), Tony Adigun & Inua Ellams (UK), Tabea Martin (Switzerland), and Marco Da Silva Ferreira (Spain).

Currency Festival 2014
Taking in dance, fetish and role-play, contemporary circus, absurd spectacle, beer drinking, flamenco and rock music, each night of the Currency festival included a double-bill in the theatre, Blind Datesbetween UK based artists, a series of free talks and Hunt & Darton’s pop-up interactive café, where food meets art. Currency brought the best and most bonkers performance from across Europe to the stage for a full-on four days.
Provocative, playful, experimental and subversive the third edition of Currency was co-presented by The Place and Crying Out Loud in partnership with the European Commission Representation in the UK and supported by EUNIC London with the help of Institut Français du Royaume-Uni. The programme was suitable for ages 16 and over as some performances include naked bodies, strong language and references of a sexual nature.
Representing France, Spain, Germany, UK, Finland, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, the participating artists are unified by their attitude to finding new ways of telling stories, breaking free from convention and using movement and performance as their primary means to comment on process, politics, culture and society.

Currency Festival 2013
Representing Belgium, France, Germany, Portugal, UK, Sweden, Austria, Czech Republic, Romania and Finland, the participating artists are unified by their attitude to finding new ways of telling stories, breaking free from convention and using movement and performance as their primary means to comment on process, politics, culture and society.
This wasn’t straightforward dance, circus or theatre but performance that blurs the borders of all three. These are ideas and forms that swap between people and places and land somewhere new. Each of the Currency evenings offered a whole programme of entertainment, ideas generation, meeting like-minded people, good conversation and food.
