SUMMARY:BOOKMORPHS: Artists’ Books from Greece & the UK
DESCRIPTION:The interactive exhibition BOOKMORPHS: Artists’ Books from Greece & the UK brings together a diverse selection of artists’ books\, book works\, book-art objects\, limited and multiple editions\, ephemera\, and journals by 44 visual artists\, curators\, publishers\, and theorists from both Greece and the UK. It marks the first comprehensive presentation in London of contemporary artists’ books by Greek and British visual artists in dialogue.  \nBOOKMORPHS borrows its title from a term used by art writer Michael Hampton and aims to foster dialogue and exchange between Greek and British artists.  \nShowcasing a wide range of techniques and media – painting\, printmaking\, drawing\, writing\, poetry\, digital printing\, cutting\, bookbinding\, sculpture\, sound\, and photography – the exhibition highlights the rich materiality and experimental nature of the book as an artistic form.  \nWhat happens when a book’s legibility is disrupted? BOOKMORPHS invites audiences to engage with books through unconventional forms of ‘reading’: holding\, touching\, activating. Here\, books transform into vehicles of unique\, interactive experiences\, allowing visitors to explore the anatomy of the book and connect more intimately with its content.  \nIn re-examining the meaning and history of the codex\, these works address a range of social\, political\, cultural\, ecological\, and gender issues. Personal narratives and subversive themes are reimagined in the artists’ book format\, expanding the ways books can be created\, read\, and understood as cultural artefacts.  \nThe various objects presented in BOOKMORPHS continue to abide by typical bibliographic references\, even though an artist’s book presents a disruption to conventional literary structures. SUMMARY:Laura Medcalf - Sense of Calm
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of Laura Medcalf’s second London solo show\, SENSE OF CALM\, at the Liszt Institute London on 11th September\, 6.00 – 8.00 pm. \nAmid the movement and energy of Trafalgar Square\, SENSE OF CALM offers a moment to pause\, a space to step away from the city’s fast pace and into something slower\, elemental\, and immersive. In this solo exhibition\, British-Hungarian multidisciplinary artist Laura Medcalf transforms the Liszt Institute into a space of stillness and presence\, shaped by open waters\, soil\, and sunlight. \nWorking with soluble\, light-sensitive crystals mixed in her unique way to paint her first layer\, Medcalf creates each of her works directly at the meeting point between land and open water. These pieces are not representations of landscapes\, but physical imprints which result from a meditative collaboration with nature. Medcalf immerses the surfaces of her works into rivers\, lakes\, and seas around the world: from Britain’s Jurassic Coast to the Danube and Tisza rivers\, the still waters of Lake Balaton\, to all the way to the Mediterranean as well as the Caribbean Sea. The sunlight\, sand\, open water\, and the weather conditions\, together with Medcalf’s layered gestural painting process\, create unique\, unrepeatable textures and tones across the surface of each work. \nThe process begins with brushstrokes applied to the paper\, which are soon set aside. Medcalf works in harmony with the environment\, allowing the organic materials gathered directly from shorelines to guide her hand. This collaboration enables the landscape itself to leave its imprint on the work. The intensity of the sun\, the texture of the soil\, and the composition of the water all play a vital role in shaping each piece. Her approach is both intuitive and exacting\, embodying a delicate balance between control and surrender. \nNone of the works has a fixed centre point. Their open\, expansive aura draws the viewer in\, radiating a sense of infinite calm. With every glance\, new forms and layers begin to unfold. Each piece holds the trace of a specific place\, allowing the ephemeral moment to become paradoxically enduring. These works are imprints of a quiet dialogue with nature and time\, silent recollections of shifting light\, gestures of weather\, subtle emotional currents\, and the transient moments of the natural world. \nAs part of the London Design Festival\, this exhibition explores how art can become more than an object of observation\, a space for stillness and inner calm. Built from organic elements\, the works establish a delicate balance between the rhythms of nature and human perception\, offering an opportunity for reflection\, renewal\, and a deeper connection with ourselves and the world around us. \nIn a world that rarely slows down\, SENSE OF CALM invites viewers to pause. DESCRIPTION:The Sun Can Be: an IPLA collective exhibition\, showcases the works of four young British-based poets operating in the fields of visual poetry\, experimental textual poetry\, text art\, and the asemic. \n\nThe works of the exhibition range from multimedia poetry\, self-portraiture\, and 3D poetry to typewriter art\, lino print\, and a prose-puzzle poem series exhibiting material\, form and method as conveyors of shifting\, alternate realities. From a triptych of calligrams that echo the Surrealism of Guillaume Apollinaire to a series of text art pieces\, to conceptual poetry that reinterprets perspective. The Sun Can Be expands on these themes through unconventional and diversified aesthetics that redefine traditional poetry\, and serves as a translation of the artistic intentions of the IPLA poets.\n\nhttps://inparentheses.cargo.site | Instagram\nIPLA Artists\nCameron Wade\nCameron Wade is a writer and poet based in London. His work explores the nature of storytelling\, the relationship between inner and outer realities\, non-linear storytelling\, and themes of madness\, ‘other’-spaces\, the eerie and the weird; experimenting with ergodic literature and meta-textuality through fiction\, prose-poetry\, visual and asemic poetry\, collage and performance.\n\nDanica Ignacio\nDanica Ignacio is a Filipino poet whose writing focuses on the juxtaposition of the ordinary and the non-ordinary by giving importance to the small. Mainly taking from more traditional forms of poetry\, her work aims to morph the everyday experience just enough to be unrecognisable while still maintaining its form.\n\nEleanor Wilders\nEleanor Wilders finds inspiration from the ignored details of routine and from the in-betweens of the everyday experience\, she crafts stories that question our assumptions about connection\, purpose\, and freedom. Her artistic practice leads to an exploration of exposure in today’s society; her work tries to confront the paradox of vulnerability in an age of hyper-connectivity\, whilst grappling with the tension between authenticity and public persona.\n\nMatthew Sokulsky\nMatthew Sokulsky is concerned with the tense relationship between nature and rational\, theology and logic\, and their ability (or not) to co-exist in the contemporary. From 2022 he has worked at Organization for Aid to Refugees (OPU) as a social worker for Ukrainian community. He is a member of a Czech Writers Association. DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of poetry as curios\, discovered text and found literary sculptures drawn from previously unseen works\, selected asemic writing and the poetic props of performances across the globe. Drawing from fifteen years of rabid activity\, this exhibition evidences the breadth of visual and conceptual poetry from one of the definitive experimentalists of the British 21st century literary scene. \n\nOn the site of the former Notting Hill Books\, a formative space for many\, including Fowler\, this exhibition emphasises the potential of the marginal\, peculiar\, detritus-as-poetry mode so removed from the medium’s stereotypical obsession with neatness\, craft and clarity. From bear suits to homemade skeletons\, handwritten novels to concrete poems\, Poet Peasant represents the core aesthetic concerns of SJ Fowler – playful\, eclectic and anti-singular\, it is a deliberate mess of fun and weird visual literature that stretches the bounds of what poetry is.\n\nwww.stevenjfowler.com/poetpeasant\n\nSJ Fowler is a writer\, poet and performer who lives in London. His work has been commissioned by The National Gallery\, Tate Modern\, BBC Radio 3\, Somerset House\, Tate Britain\, Southbank Centre and he was part of the first Hub residency at Wellcome Collection. His visual poetry has been exhibited at the V&A\, Hayward Gallery\, Jerwood Space\, Mile End Art Pavilion\, Kielder Forest\, Tate St Ives and Palais de Tokyo. He has published over 50 works\, the subject of the Small Publishers Fair 2022 feature exhibition and given over 400 performances at venues around the world. He lecturer at Kingston University and is the director of the European Poetry Festival. SUMMARY:They All Met in Karlsbad
DESCRIPTION:During the summer\, the Czech Centre’s Vitrínka Gallery presents a group exhibition showcasing recent works by eight emerging Czech artists from the 2024 Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) residencies. Their cross-disciplinary pieces reflect the town’s rich heritage and spirit of collaboration. \n\nThe Magnus Art Gallery in Prague  launched its residency programme after gaining access to an elegant apartment in an Art Nouveau palace in Karlovy Vary. Designed for two artists at a time\, the residency fosters dialogue between disciplines and encourages creative exchange. \nIn 2024\, seven artist pairs took part\, often blending media—glass with textiles\, sculpture with painting. The town’s distinctive spa town atmosphere and layered history became a powerful source of inspiration. \nInitially shown at the palace’s Display Gallery and later in Prague\, a selection of these pieces now comes to London’s Vitrínka Gallery\, offering a glimpse into how young Czech art flourishes when given space and freedom to experiment. \nArtists exhibiting in London\nAnežka Hošková & Jakub Hošek\nAnežka Hošková’s paintings reflect her romantic vision of Karlovy Vary’s churches\, landscapes\, and mineral springs\, merging meditative experiences with watercolour techniques. Jakub Hošek responded to the city’s uneasy history\, blending beautiful and dark elements into stitched compositions filled with texts\, emotions and urban fragments. \nKaríma Al-Mukhtarová & TEA\nKaríma Al-Mukhtarová explored the transformative symbolism of bathing in a monumental tapestry\, capturing the moment between death\, acceptance and rebirth. TEA created a sculpture of a scribe inspired by Egyptian aesthetics\, integrating fragments of Karíma’s tapestry into the work\, reflecting on shared experience and artistic imprint. \nAnna Jožová & Lucie Rosická\nAnna Jožová and Lucie Rosická investigated materials tied to Karlovy Vary’s nature and culture. DESCRIPTION:An Exhibition of posters from the 59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival \n\nThe Karlovy Vary International Film Festival\, founded in 1946\, is one of the oldest film festivals in the world and the most important cinematic event in Central Europe. Every year\, the picturesque West Bohemian spa town of Karlovy Vary hosts hundreds of filmmakers from around the world while offering audiences the chance to see more than 200 films\, including world premieres in the festival’s official selection and other programme sections. The festival regularly welcomes some of the biggest stars of international cinema.\n\nAlthough KVIFF is a prestigious Category A festival\, it stands out for its open and friendly atmosphere\, which makes it exceptionally welcoming to ordinary filmgoers. This unique spirit is often reflected in the festival’s visual identity\, which has been exclusively designed by Prague-based Studio Najbrt since 1995. During the workshop\, children will create a dance inspired by the myth of Icarus and Daedalus\, exploring movement and storytelling through the lens of ancient mythology.  \n\nThe VDK Dance Company is a team of professional contemporary dancers and teachers who have been delivering these performances and workshops in primary schools across England to children of all ages. SUMMARY:Kings’ Medals - Hungary’s Millenary Royal History exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Liszt Institute London is delighted to present our second exhibition\, titled Kings’ Medals: Hungary’s Millenary Royal History. The exhibition will be open to the public between 9 May – 13 June\, Monday through Thursday\, 2-6 pm\, and Fridays\, 11 am-3 pm. \nFor over 50 years\, the Alba Regia Organisation of the Hungarian Numismatic Society has played a key role in preserving Hungary’s numismatic heritage. Between 1972 and 2012\, the organisation issued and collaborated on 54 commemorative medals celebrating the country’s royal history. \nA major milestone came in 1986 with the launch of the ‘Kings Crowned and Buried in Székesfehérvár’ medal series\, later followed by ‘Királysor’\, honouring Hungarian kings of the Habsburg dynasty. Over 25 years\, this ambitious project produced 35 medals crafted through the collaboration of renowned sculptors\, goldsmiths\, and dedicated collectors. \nThis exhibition offers a unique insight into the artistry and craftsmanship behind these medals\, showcasing original designs\, minting techniques\, and the historical figures they commemorate. A detailed catalogue provides further context\, making this a must-see for history enthusiasts\, coin collectors\, and visitors to Székesfehérvár. \nThe medals\, issued annually at the Alba Regia Numismatic Meeting\, are a lasting tribute to Hungary’s royal legacy—a tangible connection to the nation’s past\, preserved in metal for future generations.

DESCRIPTION:The history of both Czech and global graphic design would be incomplete without the groundbreaking contributions of Czech artists whose work transcended borders and shaped visual culture worldwide. This event explores the lasting impact of Alphonse Mucha\, Karel Teige\, Ladislav Sutnar\, and Miroslav Šašek—visionaries whose innovations continue to inspire designers today. \n\nMucha\, the pre-eminent exponent of Art Nouveau\, revolutionized visual culture in Belle Époque Paris with his iconic theatre and advertising posters\, laying the foundation for modern graphic design\, whileTeige\, a key figure of the European avant-garde\, redefined book design through bold typography and geometric compositions. Sutnar pioneered modern information design\, creating user-friendly communication systems that remain relevant today\, and Šašek’s beloved This is… series of illustrated city guides reshaped how generations of children experienced the world.\n\nCurator Tomoko Sato (Mucha Foundation)\, Peter Zusi (The Integrity of the Avant-Garde\, Karel Teige and the Biography of an Ambition\, Legenda 2024)\,Adrian Shaughnessy (graphic designer and RCA senior lecturer)\, and Lukáš Novotný (designer and illustrator) will shed light on how these Czech designers helped shape modern visual culture through a series of illustrated presentations\, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A.\n\nTomoko Sato has been curator of the Mucha Foundation since 2007\, overseeing its exhibition and research programs. Formerly curator at the Barbican Art Gallery (Barbican Centre)\, London\, she has curated a wide range of exhibitions examin- ing the art\, architecture\, design\, and photography of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries\, with a long-standing interest in the artistic and cul- tural cross-fertilization between East and West. Her publications include Japan and Britain: An Aesthetic Dialogue\, 1850–1930 (Lund Humphries\, 1991)\, The Wilde Years: Oscar Wilde and the Art of His Time (Philip Wilson\, 2000)\, Mucha (Taschen\, 2015)\, Alphonse Mucha Photographs (Mucha Foundation Publishing\, 2018)\, and Le Pater: Le Grand Oeuvre d’Alphonse Mucha (Édition de la Réunion des musées nationaux-Grand Palais\, 2023).\n\nPeter Zusi is Associate Professor of Czech and Comparative Literature at the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies\, where he also serves as Vice Dean for Research in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. Peter’s research spans various disciplines\, including Czech and German literature and culture from the 18th through 21st centuries\, Central European intellectual history\, Czechoslovak film and photography\, Slovak literature\, theory of literary and visual avant-gardes and modernism\, philosophy of history\, Critical Theory\, and the intersection of literature and architecture. He is also the author of the recently published The Integrity of the Avant-Garde: Karel Teige and the Biography of an Ambition (Cambridge\, England: Legenda\, 2024).\n\nAdrian Shaughnessy is a graphic designer\, writer\, educator and publisher. A senior lecturer at the RCA\, he also works as an independent design consultant. His book How to Be a Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul has sold 80\,000 copies and been translated into multiple languages. He is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale and a regular contributor to leading design journals. He co-founded Unit Editions\, publishing acclaimed design books\, and has authored monographs on Herb Lubalin\, Ken Garland\, Paula Scher\, Vaughan Oliver\, FHK Henrion and Lance Wyman.\n\nLukáš Novotný is an illustrator\, graphic designer and author. His background is in the world of civil engineering and architecture\, and most of his illustrations and design work relates to architecture and cities. His latest book\, Modern New York\, won 2024 Communication Arts Awards while his first book\, Modern London\, was shortlisted for the British Book Design Awards. SUMMARY:Identity - The Story of Czech Graphic Design
DESCRIPTION:Graphic design—including posters\, books\, magazines\, logos\, orientation systems\, and even national symbols—plays a crucial role in shaping the identity of every nation. For the Czech Republic (and formerly Czechoslovakia)\, the history of graphic design since the early 20th century has been particularly complex. The Czechs had to fight for their own statehood\, endure two world wars\, navigate two totalitarian regimes\, and transition from a socialist planned economy to a market economy. \n\nThrough original works and reproductions\, visitors to the exhibition will explore the most significant achievements in Czech graphic design and learn about their creators. Accompanied by detailed texts\, the exhibition positions these works within their broader cultural\, historical\, and political contexts\, showcasing the power of graphic design to influence society and reflect societal changes.\n\nCurated by  Filip Blažek and Linda Kudrnovská\, in collaboration with commissioner David Korecký\, the exhibition is part of the multi-genre project Identity – The Story of Czech Graphic Design(www.projektidentita.cz). This ambitious initiative also includes a seven-part television series\, a feature film\, and a bilingual monograph (published in Czech and English) under the same title.\n\nThe traveling exhibition Identity is a collaboration between by Typo\, the Mowshe Studio\, the Museum of Literature\, and the Czech Centres network.
