SUMMARY:Stories of Resistance: Olivier Norek in Conversation with Andrey Kurkov
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a powerful evening of conversation between bestselling French author Olivier Norek and acclaimed Ukrainian writer Andrey Kurkov\, as they explore war\, resistance\, and the endurance of the human spirit through their latest works. \nIn The Winter Warriors\, Olivier Norek revives the icy silence of the Finnish forests during the Winter war of 1939—a forgotten front where rifles froze\, but not the will of a nation. Against all expectations\, Finland resisted the Soviet onslaught with nothing more than skis\, cunning\, and courage. At the heart of this stark and haunting narrative stands Simo Häyhä\, the legendary sniper known as the White Death\, who becomes a chilling symbol of one man’s ability to shift the tide of history. \nMeanwhile\, in Our Daily War\, Andrey Kurkov writes from today’s frontiers—not of history\, but of life itself. With piercing humanity and quiet defiance\, he documents the everyday surrealism of Ukraine under siege: children doing schoolwork in metro stations\, winemakers repurposing war detritus\, and soldiers scribbling messages of remembrance on their ammunitions. \nTogether\, these two authors offer a unique and moving reflection on what is means to resist. Across time and geography\, The Winter Warriors and Our Daily War speak to the same truth: when history tries to erase a people\, resistance becomes not just survival\, but identity. \nAs war redraws maps and tests identities\, Norek and Kurkov remind us that it is not always the grand strategies that shape destiny\, but the unbreakable thread of resilience—from the snows of Karelia to the skies above Kyiv.

SUMMARY:New Fossils - A night of modern jazz\, deep grooves\, and Eastern European mysticism
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Ninety One Living Room for a night of jazz\, electronic sounds\, and deep rhythms with New Fossils!\n\nNew Fossils is a Budapest-based quintet navigating the space between modern jazz\, deep grooves\, and Eastern European mysticism. Dániel Varga (saxophone)\, Damján Ocsovay (keys)\, István Tóth (guitar)\, Dániel Ferenc Szabó (drums)\, and Marcell Gyányi (bass) blend tight interplay with a love for the unexpected.\n\nTheir new album\, Ecosphere\, moves beyond their acoustic jazz roots into richer\, more layered territory. Recorded in the Mátra mountains\, the album grew from a collective writing process\, where each musician’s voice shaped the whole. Emma Nagy (vocals) and Áron Horváth (cimbalom) add even more texture\, bringing a sense of lyricism and an unmistakable regional feel.\n\nReleasing music through their own label\, Morotva Records\, New Fossils keeps things hands-on. They’ve shared stages with Alfa Mist\, worked with ECM artist Mathias Eick\, and built a reputation for electrifying live shows.\n\nWith Ecosphere\, they dive deeper into contrast — structured yet free\, grounded yet exploratory—proving that jazz\, much like nature\, thrives on change.

SUMMARY:Design and Transformations: An Outdoor Photographic Exhibition by Vojtech Veskrna
DESCRIPTION:This outdoor exhibition by photographer Vojtěch Veškrna complements Design and Transformation. Stories of Czech Design 1990–2020\, on view at the Czech Centre’s Bouda Gallery. Installed in the public space outside the Czech Embassy\, the series offers a visually rich\, behind-the-scenes look into twelve Czech companies where design plays a central role in shaping both products and identity. \nVeškrna’s photographs move beyond polished final outcomes to focus on the environments\, materials\, and people that define contemporary Czech design. His lens captures the quiet rhythms of daily production\, the tactile beauty of traditional techniques\, and the innovation driving forward-thinking industries—from porcelain workshops and textile printers to medical technology and game development studios. This body of work reveals design as a living process—deeply rooted in craft\, constantly evolving\, and inseparable from the cultural and industrial landscape it inhabits. \nCoorganised by the Czech Centre London and the Academy of Arts\, Architecture and Design in Prague UMPRUM. SUMMARY:Laura Medcalf - Sense of Calm
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of Laura Medcalf’s second London solo show\, SENSE OF CALM\, at the Liszt Institute London on 11th September\, 6.00 – 8.00 pm. \nAmid the movement and energy of Trafalgar Square\, SENSE OF CALM offers a moment to pause\, a space to step away from the city’s fast pace and into something slower\, elemental\, and immersive. In this solo exhibition\, British-Hungarian multidisciplinary artist Laura Medcalf transforms the Liszt Institute into a space of stillness and presence\, shaped by open waters\, soil\, and sunlight. \nWorking with soluble\, light-sensitive crystals mixed in her unique way to paint her first layer\, Medcalf creates each of her works directly at the meeting point between land and open water. These pieces are not representations of landscapes\, but physical imprints which result from a meditative collaboration with nature. Medcalf immerses the surfaces of her works into rivers\, lakes\, and seas around the world: from Britain’s Jurassic Coast to the Danube and Tisza rivers\, the still waters of Lake Balaton\, to all the way to the Mediterranean as well as the Caribbean Sea. The sunlight\, sand\, open water\, and the weather conditions\, together with Medcalf’s layered gestural painting process\, create unique\, unrepeatable textures and tones across the surface of each work. \nThe process begins with brushstrokes applied to the paper\, which are soon set aside. Medcalf works in harmony with the environment\, allowing the organic materials gathered directly from shorelines to guide her hand. This collaboration enables the landscape itself to leave its imprint on the work. The intensity of the sun\, the texture of the soil\, and the composition of the water all play a vital role in shaping each piece. Her approach is both intuitive and exacting\, embodying a delicate balance between control and surrender. \nNone of the works has a fixed centre point. Their open\, expansive aura draws the viewer in\, radiating a sense of infinite calm. With every glance\, new forms and layers begin to unfold. Each piece holds the trace of a specific place\, allowing the ephemeral moment to become paradoxically enduring. These works are imprints of a quiet dialogue with nature and time\, silent recollections of shifting light\, gestures of weather\, subtle emotional currents\, and the transient moments of the natural world. \nAs part of the London Design Festival\, this exhibition explores how art can become more than an object of observation\, a space for stillness and inner calm. Built from organic elements\, the works establish a delicate balance between the rhythms of nature and human perception\, offering an opportunity for reflection\, renewal\, and a deeper connection with ourselves and the world around us. \nIn a world that rarely slows down\, SENSE OF CALM invites viewers to pause. To listen. To feel the flow. To follow the traces of light. To look beyond the surface\, towards the quiet\, invisible forces that shape us all. \nThe exhibition is open to the public 12 September – 20 October\, Monday through Friday\, 11.00 am – 7.00 pm. \nExhibition opening: 11 September\, 6.00 – 8.00 pm. RSVP essential. \nIn partnership with the London Design Festival

SUMMARY:The Popess: Instructions for Freedom
DESCRIPTION:The Popess: Instructions for Freedom is a bold\, fast-paced solo show that resurrects a forgotten chapter of feminist resistance—with bite\, wit\, and a hint of heresy. At its core lies a true\, largely untold story: in 13th-century Milan\, a radical religious movement led by women dared to rewrite Christian history. Their messiah? Guglielma—a woman believed to be the incarnation of the Holy Spirit. Their most audacious act? Crowning a “Popess\,” Sister Maifreda da Pirovano\, who celebrated mass on Easter Sunday in the year 1300. The Inquisition struck back with brutal force: executions\, exhumations\, and public burnings. The movement was silenced—but not forgotten. \nThe story unfolds through the eyes of Everywoman—a naive yet questioning soul caught between fear\, guilt\, and a hunger for truth. Her journey winds through spiritual longing and misguided cults before she discovers Sister Maifreda and her radical vision of female-led salvation. Enchanted by a world where women hold spiritual authority\, Everywoman is drawn into a movement that promises freedom—until that very promise provokes the Church’s full wrath. \nWith sharp humour and piercing insight\, The Popess explores the tensions between faith\, power\, and personal belief—inviting audiences to ask what freedom truly means\, especially when belief itself becomes an act of defiance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBOOK TICKETS HERE

SUMMARY:The Sun Can Be: An IPLA Collective Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Sun Can Be: an IPLA collective exhibition\, showcases the works of four young British-based poets operating in the fields of visual poetry\, experimental textual poetry\, text art\, and the asemic. \n\nThe works of the exhibition range from multimedia poetry\, self-portraiture\, and 3D poetry to typewriter art\, lino print\, and a prose-puzzle poem series exhibiting material\, form and method as conveyors of shifting\, alternate realities. From a triptych of calligrams that echo the Surrealism of Guillaume Apollinaire to a series of text art pieces\, to conceptual poetry that reinterprets perspective. The Sun Can Be expands on these themes through unconventional and diversified aesthetics that redefine traditional poetry\, and serves as a translation of the artistic intentions of the IPLA poets.\n\nhttps://inparentheses.cargo.site | Instagram\nIPLA Artists\nCameron Wade\nCameron Wade is a writer and poet based in London. His work explores the nature of storytelling\, the relationship between inner and outer realities\, non-linear storytelling\, and themes of madness\, ‘other’-spaces\, the eerie and the weird; experimenting with ergodic literature and meta-textuality through fiction\, prose-poetry\, visual and asemic poetry\, collage and performance.\n\nDanica Ignacio\nDanica Ignacio is a Filipino poet whose writing focuses on the juxtaposition of the ordinary and the non-ordinary by giving importance to the small. Mainly taking from more traditional forms of poetry\, her work aims to morph the everyday experience just enough to be unrecognisable while still maintaining its form.\n\nEleanor Wilders\nEleanor Wilders finds inspiration from the ignored details of routine and from the in-betweens of the everyday experience\, she crafts stories that question our assumptions about connection\, purpose\, and freedom. Her artistic practice leads to an exploration of exposure in today’s society; her work tries to confront the paradox of vulnerability in an age of hyper-connectivity\, whilst grappling with the tension between authenticity and public persona.\n\nMatthew Sokulsky\nMatthew Sokulsky is concerned with the tense relationship between nature and rational\, theology and logic\, and their ability (or not) to co-exist in the contemporary. His work experiments with traditional forms to create decidedly new poetry that at once exemplifies modernity while recognising the rich vein of myth and ritual to which he believes all poetry fixes its base.\nOpening hours:\nThe gallery will be opened to the public 12 noon to 5pm every Wednesday to Saturday\nOpening Night and Special View\nSaturday 9 August 2025\, 7-9pm / Bouda Gallery\nThe exhibition opens on 9 August with a special event featuring Tim Postovit\, a Czech poet\, performer\, and translator of Ukrainian origin.\n\nCelebrating cross-culture collaboration and international innovation the event will also include live performances by David Spittle\, Aimae Nimmo\, Matthew Sokulsky\, Danica Ignacio\, Eleanor Wilders\, Cameron Wade and many more to be announced.\n\nAbout Tom Postovit\nTim Postovit was born in Ukraine and has lived in the Czech Republic since the age of six. He studied philology at Charles University in Prague. He translates from Ukrainian and Russian. In 2019 he published his debut collection of poems\, Magistrála (Highway). A poem from this book has been featured in the annual Best Czech Poetry anthology. He also performs slam poetry and holds the 2019 joint title for duo slam poetry. In 2021 his second poetry collection came out Motýlí pavilon (The Butterfly Pavilion). In 2022 he was nominated for Václav Burian Prize. From 2022 he has worked at Organization for Aid to Refugees (OPU) as a social worker for Ukrainian community. He is a member of a Czech Writers Association. He is based in Prague.\nIPLA and Friends.\nThursday August 14\, 2025\, 7-9pm / Bouda Gallery\nAn evening of experimental performance and readings from the IPLA Collective\, Simon Tyrell\, Irys Bird\, Oscar Sutherland-Dee\, Martin Wakefield and more to be announced!\n\nThe second event in the series features an array of bespoke new readings and performances including a world-first IPLA collaborative performance and poets travelling from across the country to read their brilliant new works for you at the historic Bouda Gallery.\nFurther accompanying events: \n\n August 16th\, 7 – 9 pm\n August 21st\, 7 – 9 pm\n August 23rd\, 7 – 9 pm\n August 28th\, 7 – 9 pm\n August 30th\, 7 – 9 pm\n\nThe Sun Can Be\, an exhibition by IPLA Collective\, is the Czech Centre’s Summer Artistic Residency — a pilot project offering a safe and supportive space for local artists and the community. SUMMARY:Your Best Guess by Mala Voadora & Chris Thorpe
DESCRIPTION:We can’t help living in the future – booking flights for holidays\, organising birthday parties\, writing applications\, sending out invitations\, producing T-shirts for tours. But all of this is merely supposition. \n\n\n\nWhen the time comes\, these things may happen according to plan\, or they may not. \n\n\n\nLife is entirely unpredictable. But what if we could rewrite history? What if we could imagine that things had turned out differently even if they had not? What if we could anticipate all roads to the future\, so that we could be prepared for any possible scenario? \n\n\n\nPortuguese theatre company mala voadora and writer and performer Chris Thorpe collaborate in Your Best Guess to investigate this unpredictability. They explore more concrete phenomena such as undetonated bombs\, goodbye letters\, ghost cities\, amulets. And\, intrigued by the way we bet on the future\, they will locate that exact point of consciousness at which things either work out as planned or go awry. \n\n\n\nA co-production of Porto City Hall Council for Culture\, Culturgest and mala voadora\, with support from Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and funding from DGARTES. \n\n\n\nThe Beacon is a custom-made touring venue for Bradford 2025. \n\n\n\nFrom 10 July – 10 August\, The Beacon will be at Cliffe Castle Park. \n\n\n\nPlan your visit below\, or get in touch with us on ticketing@bradford2025.co.uk for more information. \n\n\n\nCliffe Castle ParkSpring Gardens Ln\,Keighley\,BD20 6LH \n\n\n\nCREDITS \n\n\n\nWritten by Chris ThorpeDirected by Jorge AndradePerformed by Chris Thorpe and Jorge Andrade \n\n\n\nImage © António MV

SUMMARY:Poet Peasant: an exhibition by SJ Fowler
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of poetry as curios\, discovered text and found literary sculptures drawn from previously unseen works\, selected asemic writing and the poetic props of performances across the globe. Drawing from fifteen years of rabid activity\, this exhibition evidences the breadth of visual and conceptual poetry from one of the definitive experimentalists of the British 21st century literary scene. \n\nOn the site of the former Notting Hill Books\, a formative space for many\, including Fowler\, this exhibition emphasises the potential of the marginal\, peculiar\, detritus-as-poetry mode so removed from the medium’s stereotypical obsession with neatness\, craft and clarity. From bear suits to homemade skeletons\, handwritten novels to concrete poems\, Poet Peasant represents the core aesthetic concerns of SJ Fowler – playful\, eclectic and anti-singular\, it is a deliberate mess of fun and weird visual literature that stretches the bounds of what poetry is.\n\nwww.stevenjfowler.com/poetpeasant\n\nSJ Fowler is a writer\, poet and performer who lives in London. His work has been commissioned by The National Gallery\, Tate Modern\, BBC Radio 3\, Somerset House\, Tate Britain\, Southbank Centre and he was part of the first Hub residency at Wellcome Collection. His visual poetry has been exhibited at the V&A\, Hayward Gallery\, Jerwood Space\, Mile End Art Pavilion\, Kielder Forest\, Tate St Ives and Palais de Tokyo. He has published over 50 works\, the subject of the Small Publishers Fair 2022 feature exhibition and given over 400 performances at venues around the world. He lecturer at Kingston University and is the director of the European Poetry Festival. Poet Peasant … is his 8th solo exhibition.\n\nOpening hours:\nThe gallery will be opened to the public 12 noon to 5pm every Wednesday to Saturday\n\nAccompanying events:\nJuly 19th\, July 24th July 26th\, July 31st\, August 2nd 7pm – 9pm.

SUMMARY:They All Met in Karlsbad
DESCRIPTION:During the summer\, the Czech Centre’s Vitrínka Gallery presents a group exhibition showcasing recent works by eight emerging Czech artists from the 2024 Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) residencies. Their cross-disciplinary pieces reflect the town’s rich heritage and spirit of collaboration. \n\nThe Magnus Art Gallery in Prague  launched its residency programme after gaining access to an elegant apartment in an Art Nouveau palace in Karlovy Vary. Designed for two artists at a time\, the residency fosters dialogue between disciplines and encourages creative exchange. \nIn 2024\, seven artist pairs took part\, often blending media—glass with textiles\, sculpture with painting. The town’s distinctive spa town atmosphere and layered history became a powerful source of inspiration. \nInitially shown at the palace’s Display Gallery and later in Prague\, a selection of these pieces now comes to London’s Vitrínka Gallery\, offering a glimpse into how young Czech art flourishes when given space and freedom to experiment. \nArtists exhibiting in London\nAnežka Hošková & Jakub Hošek\nAnežka Hošková’s paintings reflect her romantic vision of Karlovy Vary’s churches\, landscapes\, and mineral springs\, merging meditative experiences with watercolour techniques. Jakub Hošek responded to the city’s uneasy history\, blending beautiful and dark elements into stitched compositions filled with texts\, emotions and urban fragments. \nKaríma Al-Mukhtarová & TEA\nKaríma Al-Mukhtarová explored the transformative symbolism of bathing in a monumental tapestry\, capturing the moment between death\, acceptance and rebirth. TEA created a sculpture of a scribe inspired by Egyptian aesthetics\, integrating fragments of Karíma’s tapestry into the work\, reflecting on shared experience and artistic imprint. \nAnna Jožová & Lucie Rosická\nAnna Jožová and Lucie Rosická investigated materials tied to Karlovy Vary’s nature and culture. Jožová’s luminous glass objects engaged in dialogue with Rosická’s embroidered textiles\, as both artists inspired each other to cross creative and material boundaries\, exchanging insights from their differing practices. \nNéphéli Barbas & Jakub Tytykalo\nNéphéli Barbas was drawn to the city’s layered architecture and forested surroundings\, translating these into sculptural forms of bent aluminium. Jakub Tytykalo created a unique series of paintings exploring the inner energy of underground springs\, blending elemental forces in vibrant\, otherworldly compositions. \n\nEXHIBITION OPENING\nWith artists Karíma Al-Mukhtarová & TEA\nFriday 11 July 2025\, 6.30 – 8.30 pm\nFree entry\, Book Here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/they-all-met-in-karlsbad-private-view-tickets-1376243093139?aff=oddtdtcreator \n\nEXHIBITION DATES: 11 July – 31 August 2025\nVENUE\nVitrínka Gallery\, Czech Centre London\n30 Kensington Palace Gardens\, London\, W8 4QY\nOPENING HOURS:\nTue – Fri 10am – 5pm\nor by appointment – +44 (0) 207 836 3669\n\nOrganised by Czech Centre London in partnership with Magnus Art Gallery and J&T Bank. \nThis exhibition is part of From Karlovy Vary\, With Art\, the Czech Centre’s series celebrating the cultural legacy and creative spirit of Karlovy Vary through contemporary art\, design and cinema — including the tribute screening Jiří Bartoška In Memoriam: Shadows of a Hot Summer\, the group exhibition They All Met in Karlsbad and the poster showcase The Embrace as a Symbol of Closeness from the 59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

SUMMARY:Tu i Tam/Tyt i Tam
DESCRIPTION:Tim Smith & Marta Szymańska \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAn exhibition documenting our Polish and Ukrainian communities. \n\n\n\nExile\, identity and the nature of home come into focus at this captivating exhibition exploring Polish and Ukrainian communities in Bradford and beyond.More than 150\,000 Poles and 35\,000 Ukrainians resettled in the UK following the Second World War – and the thriving local textiles industry helped make Yorkshire a popular destination. Bradford soon became home to large\, proud and tight-knit Polish and Ukrainian communities – joined in the last two decades by economic migrants from Poland and\, more recently\, people displaced by the war in Ukraine. \n\n\n\nTu i Tam/Tyt i Tam (respectively\, Polish and Ukrainian for ‘Here and There’) explores the fascinating histories of these communities through unique objects\, rare archival materials and photographs – including many by Bradford’s own Tim Smith\, who’s been documenting the city’s Polish and Ukrainian communities for more than 40 years. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition\, which has been created in partnership with Łódź Fotofestiwal\, will be accompanied by a programme of special events exploring the nature of migration\, exile and social change\, both then and now – details to be announced. \n\n\n\nThe Gallery at Loading Bay is open at the following times: \n\n\n\n\nThursday – Saturday 12-6pm\n\n\n\nSunday 12-4pm\n\n\n\nThe gallery will also open to view before evening shows\n\n\n\n\nLoading Bay is a brand new pop-up arts venue in Bradford City Centre for Bradford 2025. \n\n\n\nJoin us on Duke Street as we bring a true Bradford 2025 buzz to the heart of the city. \n\n\n\nPlan your visit using our sustainable travel planner. \n\n\n\nLoading Bay1 Duke StreetBradfordBD1 3QR

SUMMARY:Jiří Bartoška In Memoriam: Shadows of a Hot Summer
DESCRIPTION:To honour the late Jiří Bartoška (1947–2025)\, iconic Czech actor and longtime president of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival\, and to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War\, the Czech Centre presents a special screening of the digitally restored Shadows of a Hot Summer (Stíny horkého léta)\, a haunting post-war drama from legendary Czech filmmaker František Vláčil. \nSet in the Beskydy Mountains two years after the end of WWII\, the film follows shepherd Ondřej Baran (Juraj Kukura)\, who lives peacefully with his wife (Marta Vančurová) and two children on an isolated farmstead. Their quiet existence is shattered when a retreating band of Ukrainian nationalist paramilitaries—part of a guerrilla force fighting Soviet control—invades their home\, seeking refuge and medical help for a wounded comrade on their flight to the West. As the family is taken hostage—along with the local doctor—Ondřej is thrust into a moral and physical battle\, forced to protect his loved ones in the face of escalating violence and psychological torment. \n\n\n\n\n\nFeaturing a chillingly memorable performance by Jiří Bartoška in one of his darkest roles\, Shadows of a Hot Summer is a masterclass in suspense and visual storytelling. Vláčil applies the classical unities of time\, place\, and action to build mounting tension through muted performances\, stark camerawork\, and an unforgettable score by Zdeněk Liška—his final collaboration with Vláčil. \n\n\n\n\nWinner of the Crystal Globe at the 1978 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival andrecently restored for its 2024 KVIFF premiere\, this powerful ballad of moral resistance and quiet heroism remains as urgent and resonant today as ever. A psychological thriller wrapped in poetic austerity\, it stands as a lasting testament to the artistic legacy of both Jiří Bartoška and František Vláčil. \nFrantišek Vláčil\, Czechoslovakia 1977\, 100’\, English subtitles\nCast: Juraj Kukura\, Marta Vančurová\, Jiří Bartoška\, Gustáv Valach\, Robert Lischke \n\nAdmission: £7 (+ Eventbrite fee)

SUMMARY:Albert Kner – Artist\, Icon\, Legend
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening celebrating the book Albert Kner: Artist\, Icon\, Legend: Discovering His Legacy in Industrial Design\, co-authored by Robert Elton Brooker III and Ádám Erdész. This beautifully produced volume brings long-overdue recognition to one of the 20th century’s unsung creative minds. \nAlbert Kner (1899–1976) was a Hungarian-American designer whose work shaped modern packaging and graphic design. From inventing the cardboard six-pack and the flip-top cigarette box to producing compelling stage sets\, furniture\, and printed matter\, Kner’s contribution to visual culture is both diverse and visionary\, yet remains largely unknown. \nThis event will contain a presentation by Robert Brooker III on Kner’s extraordinary life and career\, tracing his journey from early typographic experimentation in Hungary to his post-war success as Design Director for America’s largest cardboard manufacturer\, where he was tasked with an unusual but inspiring challenge: make cardboard beautiful. \nThe book includes 112 striking illustrations in black and white and full colour\, showcasing Kner’s elegant\, often ahead-of-his-time design work. As designer and author Bruce Kennett writes\, “Brooker and Erdész have done a superb job in presenting Kner’s remarkable life in all its phases… A wonderful book from start to finish.” \nDon’t miss this opportunity to rediscover a hidden gem of 20th-century design history – book your spot now.

SUMMARY:MY DEAR ELEKTRA by Arianna Economou
DESCRIPTION:MY DEAR ELEKTRA is inspired by the journey of British surrealist artist\, writer and occultist Ithell Colquhoun (1906–1988) to Cyprus. SUMMARY:Voices for Freedom: An Evening with Oleksandra Matviichuk
DESCRIPTION:Join Oleksandra Matviichuk\, winner of the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize\, for a charity event supporting war-affected communities in Ukraine. \nOleksandra Matviichuk\, has been a major figure in the fight for Ukraine’s survival. And she has given a voice to the victims of the conflict : the Center for Civil Liberties\, which she runs\, has tirelessly recorded the mass atrocities committed by Russia\, the daily war crimes on the battlefield\, the harrowing treatment of captives and the illegal abduction and reprogramming of children to reject their native language and culture. \nAs the pressure mounts on Ukraine to accept a ceasefire on any terms\, her greatest fear is that a peace defined in narrow\, territorial terms will achieve nothing. A robust peace is one that is built on the premises that Russia will not stop seeking the destruction of Ukraine through other means. She will explain that beyond security guarantees\, peace cannot be achieved without justice for the victims\, without the return of captives and children and without reparations to rebuild Ukraine. \nOrganised for charitable purposes\, this event is being held in partnership with the Insulate Ukraine association\, an innovative initiative that works to rehabilitate homes damaged by the bombardments. Half of all ticket proceeds will support their efforts\, with a dedicated fundraiser also taking place during the evening.

SUMMARY:Photographer John Donat in 1960s Crete
DESCRIPTION:Travelling to Crete after completing his studies at the Architectural Association\, John Donat found on the island the inspiration to redirect his career from architecture to photography – as he put it\, Crete set him free. Initially attracted by the prospect of recording the outstanding byzantine frescoes of the local churches\, Donat soon also turned his attention to the landscape and the towns’ streetscape. He became fascinated by all aspects of life on the island\, from the many traditional crafts to the religious festivities. It is indeed in Crete that he started to explore the theme that would become the leitmotif of his work\, the relationship between buildings and the people who inhabit them. Donat was to become one of the foremost British architectural photographers of his generation by capturing the built environment with a social documentary\, almost photojournalistic approach. He always valued his experience in Crete and\, many years later\, he managed to publish his beautiful images of the island in the book Crete 1960 (Crete University Press\, 1999) and display them at the Hellenic Centre in The Real Crete exhibition (2001). \n\nValeria Carullo\, Photographs Curator at the Royal Institute of British Architects\, presents Donat’s work. Q&A will follow the presentation.  \nTickets: £3/2 concession\, free for Members\n\n\nBooking required via Eventbrite\n or 020 7487 5060

SUMMARY:The Double Bass
DESCRIPTION:‘You can have an orchestra without a first violin\, without wind instruments\, without brass\, without a timpani\, but you can’t have an orchestra without a double bass.’\n\nIn Patrick Süskind’s much-loved one-act play ‘The Double Bass’ (Der Kontrabaß)\, the playwright portrays a life gone wrong with humour and irony\, interpreted by actor Viktor Klem.\n\nThe Double Bass (Der Kontrabaß) is a direct conversation between musician and spectator. The double bass player is honest about his life\, his love\, his relationship with music and society\, his weaknesses\, and even plays on his instrument in between his monologues.  The musician protagonist believes his instrument to be the most important in an orchestra\, even though one couldn’t tell. Throughout his solitary reflections\, it becomes clear that he\, in fact\, hates his double bass and that the instrument itself is the main cause of all his frustrations. The question is whether he can change his life and finally get the attention of his secretly adored young soprano singer.\n\n‘The protagonist of the original work is exactly twice my age. But the questions and problems he raises are as much for a young man of today as for an experienced musician about to retire…’ /Viktor Klem/\n\nRuntime: 1 hour 10 minutes\, without intermission.\n\nPerformed in Hungarian with English subtitles.
