SUMMARY:Women in Focus: Sara Polak
DESCRIPTION:The guest of the next edition of the Czech Centre’s Women in Focus series will be Sara Polak\, an archaeologist\, evolutionary anthropologist\, and technology innovator whose work bridges the humanities and cutting-edge AI research.\n\nPolak is a co-founder of the Mobilis Institute and the blockchain educational platform ShellProof\, a Visiting Research Fellow and part-time lecturer at the University of Oxford\, and leads the CCHAOS Research group at the Faculty of Information Technology\, Czech Technical University. Her focus lies in the digitisation of cultural heritage and the simulation of civilisational dynamics. Having spent much of her career in the UK and the USA tech sectors\, Polak is passionate about connecting modern technologies with the humanities. She has been named on Forbes’ 30 Under 30\, was recognised as a Top Innovator (2022)\, and received the Business Revolution Award from the UK Department for International Trade. She believes that only through education and interdisciplinary collaboration can humanity fulfil its potential — and perhaps one day survive on Mars. She explores these ideas through the Civilisational Resilience think tank\, which she co-founded.\n\nIn her talk Archaeology and AI: the last hope for our survival?\, Sara Polak will explore how civilisational resilience — the ability of societies to endure\, adapt\, and thrive through both crises and everyday pressures — increasingly depends on the synergy between technology and the humanities. She will examine how artificial intelligence and archaeology can enrich our understanding of past societies and offer strategies for a more sustainable future. By combining AI-driven archaeological research with humanistic insight\, we can preserve cultural heritage\, learn from historical adaptations\, and help shape ethical\, resilient technologies for generations to come.\n\nAdmission: £5 (+ Eventbrite fee)\nBook Here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/women-in-focus-sara-polak-tickets-1372620447709?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:The Music of Asia Minor: Presenting Violin Legends Semsis & Ogdontakis
DESCRIPTION:In this year’s Rebetiko Carnival\, violonist Kyriakos Gouventas and a group of brilliant musicians present the work of master violinists Dimitris Semsis (Salonikios) and Ioannis Dragatsis (Ogdontakis). Reviving the precious music of Santourovioli\, the combination of violin\, santur and guitar\, this evening will introduce you to the early rebetiko music of Asia Minor. \n\nDuring the great population movement in the southern Balkans in the early 20th century\, seminal artists from Constantinople\, Smyrna and the coasts of Asia Minor settled on the Greek islands and ports. Among them\, great music masters such as Dimitris Semsis (Salonikios) and Ioannis Dragatsis (Ogdontakis) came to Greece\, bringing along their sound and becoming leading figures in the local music scene.  \n\nTheir captivating performances and recordings made them legendary figures in the history of world music. The main instruments in Early Rebetika are violin\, santur\, guitar\, kanun\, oud and tampoura. Santurovioli is a minimal combination of violin\, santur and guitar. These three form an impressively functional musical system where the microtonal use of the violin shines brightly in the rich harmonics of the santur over a solid bass-guitar rhythmical background. Today\, there are only a few grand masters in the genre and Kyriakos Gouventas is considered the leading figure worldwide. \n\nCo–organised with Rebetiko Carnival.\n\nTickets: £16/12 concession or £20 at the door | Booking via Ticket Tailor\nor 020 7487 5060

SUMMARY:Book Presentation and Discussion with Anne Sebba and Rosie Goldsmith – The Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz
DESCRIPTION:The ACF London is delighted to welcome acclaimed historian and biographer Anne Sebba for a special evening celebrating her latest publication The Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz – A Story of Survival. \nThis event will feature an introduction to the orchestra\, whose main conductor was the Viennese-born Alma Rosé\, and a discussion with Anne Sebba and award-winning journalist Rosie Goldsmith\, followed by a Q&A. \nIn 1943\, German SS officers in charge of Auschwitz-Birkenau ordered that an orchestra should be formed among the female prisoners. Almost fifty women and girls from eleven nations were drafted into a hurriedly assembled band that would play marching music to other inmates\, forced labourers who left each morning and returned\, exhausted and often broken\, at the end of the day. While still living amid the most brutal and dehumanising of circumstances\, they were also made to give weekly concerts for Nazi officers\, and individual members were sometimes summoned to give solo performances of an officer’s favourite piece of music. It was the only entirely female orchestra in any of the Nazi prison camps and\, for almost all of the musicians chosen to take part\, being in the orchestra saved their lives. What role could music play in a death camp? What was the effect on those women who owed their survival to their participation in a Nazi propaganda project? And how did it feel to be forced to provide solace to the perpetrators of a genocide that claimed the lives of their family and friends? \nFrom Alma Rosé\, the orchestra’s main conductor\, niece of Gustav Mahler and a formidable pre-war celebrity violinist\, to Anita Lasker-Wallfisch\, its teenage cellist and last surviving member\, Sebba draws on meticulous archival research and exclusive first-hand accounts to tell the full and astonishing story of the orchestra\, its members and the response of other prisoners for the first time. \nAnne Sebba is a historian and an award-winning biographer who began her career as a Reuters correspondent based in London and Rome. She has written eleven works of non-fiction\, mostly about iconic 20th century women\, translated into a variety of languages including French\, Polish\, Czech\, Japanese and Chinese\, makes regular television and radio appearances and has presented two BBC radio documentaries about musicians. She is the author of the international bestseller That Woman\, an acclaimed biography of Wallis Simpson\, Duchess of Windsor\, and the prize-winning Les Parisiennes: How the Women of Paris Lived\, Loved and Died Under Nazi Occupation. Her most recent book was Ethel Rosenberg\, the Short Life and Great Betrayal of an American Wife and Mother\, shortlisted for the Wingate award. Anne is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature\, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Historical Research and trustee of the National Archives Trust. \nRosie Goldsmith is an award-winning journalist specializing in arts and foreign affairs. A BBC staff Senior Broadcast Journalist for twenty years\, she travelled the world and presented several flagship programmes. Today she combines journalism with chairing and curating arts and literary events in the UK and across the world. Known also as a champion of international literature\, translation and language learning\, she promotes them whenever she can. She is Founder and Director of the European Literature Network\, Editor-in-Chief of The Riveter magazine\, Artistic Director of the European Writers’ Festival and was Chair of the Judges of the EBRD Literature Prize 2018-2020\, a prize that she helped set up. She is presenter of the Slightly Foxed books podcast.

SUMMARY:Sándor Weöres's PSYCHE - monodrama in one act
DESCRIPTION:Liszt Institute London invites you to a unique monodrama\, Psyche\, the first English translation of a one-woman show from Sándor Weöres’ collections of letters\, poems\, and various documents that chronicle the life of a fictional 19th-century woman around whom the play centres.\n\nElizabeth Lonyay\, alias Psyche\, a gypsy countess and poet\, wanders across Europe during the Napoleonic era in a chauvinistic society that challenges her independence. Based on the unique book Psyche: Writings of an Erstwhile Poetess\, written in 1972 by Hungary’s celebrated national poet\, Sándor Weöres; this production brings a cornerstone of Hungarian literature to English-speaking audiences for the first time.\n\nA ‘purification‘ in 60 minutes.\n\n‘I\, on the other hand\, give a sense of touch\, taste\, and smell to everything I write about. When I write about eating cake\, the reader should think he is eating one; if I should mention my breasts or my waist\, they should feel themselves bedding me\, or sitting closely beside me. I wish to be the whore Venus embracing all the World\, or if that is not possible\, of all my Readers.‘\n\nPerformed in English.

SUMMARY:Intercepted
DESCRIPTION:In this extraordinary film\, Oksana Karpovycg juxtaposes extracts from thousands of intercepted phone calls Russian soldiers made from the battlefield in Ukraine to their families and friends in Russia with calm images of the destruction caused by the invasion and the day-to-day life of the Ukrainian people who resist and rebuild. The voices of the Russian soldiers—ranging from being filled with heroic illusions to complete disappointment and loss of reason\, from looting to committing more horrible war crimes\, from propaganda to doubt and disillusionment—expose the whole scope of the dehumanising power of war and imperialist nature of the Russian aggression.

SUMMARY:The Divided Island: Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:The Divided Island brings the Cyprus issue into sharp focus\, attempting an objective perspective on this complex and long-standing conflict. With Nicosia remaining Europe’s last divided capital\, the documentary explores the aftermath of the 1974 conflict\, which left the North predominantly inhabited by Turkish Cypriots and the South by Greek Cypriots. After 50 years of stalled negotiations\, the question remains: will the island ever reunite?  \nAmid the ongoing wars against Ukraine and Palestine\, the frozen divide in Cyprus has often been forgotten. The Divided Island challenges the hostile narratives commonly seen in mainstream media\, instead seeking the truth through deeply personal interviews with those whose lives\, homes\, and country were torn apart\, alongside the voices of young Cypriots yearning for  reconciliation.  \nThis debut feature documentary is directed by Turkish Cypriot Cey Sesiguzel and co-produced by Greek Cypriot Andreas Tokkallos\, the founders of the award-winning London-based production company\, Two Fresh Productions. By offering a nuanced and unbiased understanding of the Cyprus issue\, The Divided Island fosters a narrative of hope for a peaceful future and a resolution to the ‘Cyprus problem.’  \nDirector: Cey Sesiguzel  \nProducer: Andreas Tokkallos  \nRunning Time:  90 Minutes  \nCert: 15  \nThe Q&A will be hosted by BFI Digital Production Editor and Film Programmer Georgia Korossi.  \nTickets\n\n£6/4 concession\nBooking required via Eventbrite or 020 7487 5060

SUMMARY:RELOCATIONS [ΜΕΤΑΚΟΜΙΣΕΙΣ] — A Solo Exhibition by Zenon Jepras
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Cyprus House in London for the opening of RELOCATIONS [ΜΕΤΑΚΟΜΙΣΕΙΣ]\, a powerful solo exhibition by acclaimed Cypriot-Greek-Welsh artist Zenon Jepras. \nThrough vivid\, narrative-driven painting\, Jepras explores memory\, exile\, mythology\, and the deeply personal stories that shape our sense of place and belonging. The exhibition traces a lifelong journey — both physical and emotional — beginning with a family road trip across Europe in the summer of 1974\, just as Cyprus faced the trauma of invasion. \nIn Jepras’ words\, “To paint is to unpack.” His canvases are richly layered with symbolism\, texture\, and emotion\, inviting viewers to reflect on the objects\, memories\, and meanings we carry with us — especially in times of upheaval. \nFrom ancient myth to absurdist theatre\, from current socio-political realities to personal archives of displacement\, RELOCATIONS is a story both intimate and universal. \nAbout the Artist \nBorn in Wales in 1969 to Greek parents from Cyprus and Corfu\, Zenon Jepras studied painting at the Glasgow School of Art and Critical Studies at Goldsmiths\, University of London. He has exhibited widely in Cyprus\, the UK\, Greece\, Portugal\, and Germany\, and his works are held in major collections including the Cypriot State Collection of Contemporary Art\, the Central Bank of Cyprus\, and the Luciano Benetton Collection. \nAdmission is free. \nAll are welcome. The opening event includes welcome drinks and speeches. \nFollow Zenon Jepras on Instagram: @zenonart.cyArtist Website: zenonart.co.uk

SUMMARY:Book Presentation & Discussion with Teresa Präauer and Eleanor Updegraff - Cooking in the Wrong Century
DESCRIPTION:The ACF London is delighted to welcome the acclaimed Austrian novelist and essayist Teresa Präauer for a special evening celebrating the English publication of her latest novel Cooking in the Wrong Century\, translated by Eleanor Updegraff\, and published by Pushkin Press. \nCooking In the Wrong Century tells the story of a keenly observed dinner party in several attempts\, opening up different avenues of how the evening might unfold. It is a witty novel about taste in our age of social media\, with a spotify playlist as an ironic musical counterpoint. A celebrated novelist\, Teresa Präauer has also made a name for herself as an incisive and witty essayist with her own column in the broadsheet “Süddeutsche Zeitung” on the ways we speak and live now. She writes about images and fashion\, about trash TV and pop culture\, about art and everyday life\, and in Cooking in the Wrong Century the qualities of the novelist and the essayist are merged to great effect. \nTeresa Präauer and Eleanor Updegraff will discuss the novel\, its themes and the process of literary translation. \nThe event will be chaired by Andrea Capovilla\, Director of the Ingeborg Bachmann Centre for Austrian Literature and Culture and will conclude with an audience Q&A session. \nThis bilingual event is accessible to non-German speakers. \n\nTeresa Präauer is an author and visual artist based in Vienna. She studied German Studies at the University of Salzburg and the Humboldt University of Berlin as well as painting at the Mozarteum Salzburg. Her novels include “Für den Herrscher aus Übersee” (For the Ruler from Overseas)\, “Johnny und Jean\,” “Oh Schimmi”\, as well as the essay “Tier werden” (Becoming Animal). She has received numerous awards for her novels\, essays\, and short stories\, including the 2022 Ben Witter Prize\, the 2017 Erich Fried Prize. “Kochen im falschen Jahrhundert\, (Wallstein 2023) is her first novel to be translated into English and won the highly prestigious 2024 Bremer Literaturpreis. \nEleanor Updegraff https://www.eleanorupdegraff.co.uk/about is a writer\, editor\, and translator of contemporary German and Austrian literature. SUMMARY:MAPPING THE CITY - European Writers in London
DESCRIPTION:A special event celebrating the 2025 UCL European Literary Map of London Writer in Residence\, featuring four exceptional writers: Ireland’s Ciara Broderick;Nisrine Mbarki from the Netherlands; Domas Raibys from Lithuania and Iryna Shuvalova from Ukraine. \n\n\n\nFor centuries\, writers have come to London from across Europe\, to live or visit. Their encounters with the city leave a mark: on the writer\, on their work and often on London itself. To honour and record their presence\, University College London (UCL) has created a unique digital map\, Lost and Found: A European Literary Map of London. The map highlights the impact of past writers on the city and invites living writers to contribute and reflect on London as a destination and place where people\, languages\, literatures and cultures meet and are transformed. \n\n\n\nTo mark UCL’s 2025 European Literary Map of London Writer in Residence\, this special event features this year’s selected Writer in Residence\, Ireland’s Ciara Broderick\, alongside three of the shortlisted writers\, Nisrine Mbarki from the Netherlands\, Domas Raibys from Lithuania and Iryna Shuvalova from Ukraine. \n\n\n\nThese four exceptional writers\, for whom sense of place is integral to their writing\, will read from their work and discuss their relationship with London as a city of literature and cultural exchange\, as well as how they propose to make their own mark on the European Literary Map of London. Which languages and literatures have had the greatest impact on London’s literary life\, which are missing and why? How do contemporary writers view their European literary forebears and their influence on London? And\, does London still have the draw it once had for Europe’s writers? \n\n\n\nThe event is hosted and curated by journalist and presenter Rosie Goldsmith. \n\n\n\nCo-organised by UCL European Institute\, the European Literature Network\, EUNIC London and the European Parliament Liaison Office in the UK\, with the support of UCL Grand Challenges\, the Lithuanian Culture Institute London\, the Ukrainian Institute London\, the Goethe-Institut London\, the Irish Embassy London and the Dutch Embassy London. \n\n\n\nRSVP by 12 May. \n\n\n\nFor further information about the event or UCL’s European Writer in Residence programme please email: contact@eurolitnetwork.com. \n\n\n\nThe European Parliament Liaison Office in the UK plays an active role in promoting European values and culture in the UK via its cultural diplomacy projects and has a proud tradition of providing space for creative discussion and cultural exchange in its 12 Star Gallery in Europe House.

SUMMARY:Women in Focus: Juliet Vopěnka Navrátilová
DESCRIPTION:The next edition of the Czech Centre’s Women in Focus series takes a unique turn—this time delving into the deeply personal and spiritual. Juliet Vopěnka Navrátilová\, author\, shamanic practitioner\, Blue Badge guide\, and anthropology student\, shares her transformative journey from illness and emotional struggle to healing and empowerment. Through sensitivity\, ritual\, and connection\, she redefines what it means to thrive in today’s world. \nAbout Juliet Vopěnka Navrátilová\n\nJuliet left the Czech Republic at 19 and spent two decades in London after a few years in Berlin. Her lifelong sensitivity\, once a burden\, became a strength during a deep “alchemical journey of metamorphoses.” This is also the subtitle of her second book\, Cesta (ne)mocné Londýňanky (The Journey of a Power(less) Londoner)\, which explores trauma\, healing\, and shamanic calling. Her London life included work in Wandsworth prison and as a Blue Badge guide. With degrees in Social and Medical Anthropology from Goldsmiths and UCL\, her study focused on consciousness\, ecofeminism\, and ritual. Her first book\, Myslet srdcem (Thinking with the Heart)\, became a Czech bestseller.About the Theme of the Evening – An Empath’s Journey from Rags to Riches \nIn this edition of the Czech Centre’s Women in Focus series\, Juliet Vopěnka Navrátilová offers a deeply personal and spiritual reflection on living with extreme sensitivity. Her “shamanic illness” became the turning point that redirected her path—from illness and emotional struggle to healing\, empowerment\, and purpose. In this context\, “rags to riches” refers not to material wealth\, but to emotional\, mental\, and spiritual abundance gained through self-understanding. \nThrough travels in Latin America and participation in shamanic ceremonies\, Juliet came to see her empathic nature as a gift rather than a burden. Empaths—highly sensitive\, neurodiverse individuals—often absorb others’ emotions unconsciously\, leading to exhaustion and illness. By embracing her sensitivity\, she now helps others reconnect with their intuition and inner power. As a shamanic practitioner\, she also energetically cleanses homes and spaces. Her journey is one of transformation through ritual\, awareness\, and heart-centred connection. \nwww.thinkingwiththeheart.com\nwww.mysletsrdcem.cz

SUMMARY:Kings’ Medals - Hungary’s Millenary Royal History exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Liszt Institute London is delighted to present our second exhibition\, titled Kings’ Medals: Hungary’s Millenary Royal History. The exhibition will be open to the public between 9 May – 13 June\, Monday through Thursday\, 2-6 pm\, and Fridays\, 11 am-3 pm. \nFor over 50 years\, the Alba Regia Organisation of the Hungarian Numismatic Society has played a key role in preserving Hungary’s numismatic heritage. Between 1972 and 2012\, the organisation issued and collaborated on 54 commemorative medals celebrating the country’s royal history. \nA major milestone came in 1986 with the launch of the ‘Kings Crowned and Buried in Székesfehérvár’ medal series\, later followed by ‘Királysor’\, honouring Hungarian kings of the Habsburg dynasty. Over 25 years\, this ambitious project produced 35 medals crafted through the collaboration of renowned sculptors\, goldsmiths\, and dedicated collectors. \nThis exhibition offers a unique insight into the artistry and craftsmanship behind these medals\, showcasing original designs\, minting techniques\, and the historical figures they commemorate. A detailed catalogue provides further context\, making this a must-see for history enthusiasts\, coin collectors\, and visitors to Székesfehérvár. \nThe medals\, issued annually at the Alba Regia Numismatic Meeting\, are a lasting tribute to Hungary’s royal legacy—a tangible connection to the nation’s past\, preserved in metal for future generations.

SUMMARY:Of course I know eternity: Wilhelm Traeger + Gray Wielebinski
DESCRIPTION:The ACF is pleased to announce our summer exhibition Of course I know eternity: Wilhelm Traeger + Gray Wielebinski\, curated by Sasha Shevchenko and Pia Zeitzen of Kollektiv Collective. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition brings together the works of Wilhelm Traeger (1907 – 1980) and Gray Wielebinski (b. 1991) in a unique artistic dialogue and a site-specific\, collaborative exercise in temporal contextualisation. We are thrilled to present 13 large-scale collages by Traeger for the first time in the UK alongside site-specific works by London-based contemporary multimedia artist Gray Wielebinski. Representing a generation of Austrian artists who were unable to establish international careers during their lifetime\, Traeger’s work encounters that of Wielebinski\, which\, in contrast\, is formed in a globalised and hyperconnected world. Alongside each other\, Traeger and Wielebinski demarcate a time where one artist’s tomorrow is the other’s present-day\, a moment after the fall and\, at once\, on the edge of the next. \n\n\n\nAs a conversation between two artists who have never met\, Of course I know eternity defies distance – physical\, temporal\, geographical and that of a lifetime – through Traeger’s and Wielebinski’s shared fascination with collage\, both as a medium and a methodology. Together\, Traeger’s collages-on-paper dating between 1961 and 1969 and Wielebinski’s site-specific installations interrogate the ways in which time is felt and contextualised. The resulting visual kaleidoscope joins fragments\, forms and nuances across the two floors and corridors of the ACF. Here\, collage becomes a totalising force that extends beyond the edges of a given artwork\, implicating the very walls and stairways of the building they occupy. \n\n\n\nThis artistic and intergenerational exchange explores the intellectual and artistic legacy of the Austrian post-war avant-garde\, their questions reverberating in the present moment. Opening on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII\, Of course I know eternity examines the nonlinearity of history\, collaging together the conflicting relationship of hope and fear as it was felt then\, as it is felt now. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition will be on view at the ACF London until Friday 18 July 2025. \n\n\n\nOpening: 8th May at 6pm.
