SUMMARY:Vaclav Havel European Dialogues / Growth and Inequality in Central Europe: Between Havel’s Vision and Today’s Cleavages
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a third edition of the annual Václav Havel European Dialogues\, a global series of discussions inspired by Havel’s enduring legacy organised jointly by the Czech Centre London\, SSEES and the Research Centre for the Study of Places\, Identities\, and Memories (PIMs). \n\nOver the last three decades\, the Central European countries have experienced some of the fastest economic growths in the world. The region has joined the ranks of highly developed countries\, and its citizens are wealthier and living longer than ever before. In Czechia\, this transformation was closely tied to the democratic ideals articulated by Václav Havel\, whose vision of an open society and civic responsibility shaped the country’s path during the early years of transition. Yet\, within a generation\, Central Europe has also moved from being one of the most egalitarian regions in Europe to one of the most unequal. This indicates that the growth has not benefited all equally. What are the sources of the Central European miracle\, and who are its main beneficiaries? What are the consequences of the increasing inequalities for these societies\, especially in the context of growing political polarisation? How can we ensure that future growth in the region will be inclusive? \nThe event will be moderated by Jessie Barton Hronešová and will feature an esteemed panel of speakers\, including Zsoka Koczan\, Lead Economist in the Office of the Chief Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development\, Lubomír Lízal\, economist and former director of CERGE-EI\, Prague\, Pawel Bukowski\, co-director of the new Research Center for the Study of Places\, Identities\, and Memories (PIMs)\, and a word of welcome by Přemysl Pela\, the director of the Czech Center in London. \nAbout the speakers: \nZsoka Koczan is Associate Director\, Lead Economist in the Office of the Chief Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. At the EBRD\, she edits the Regional Economic Prospects\, which review the latest economic developments in the EBRD regions\, works on the Transition Report\, EBRD’s annual flagship publication\, and runs the Life in Transition Survey\, a large household survey covering 44 economies. Prior to joining the EBRD\, she worked as an economist at the International Monetary Fund in the European and the Research Departments\, primarily on the World Economic Outlook. She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Cambridge \nPaweł Bukowski is a Lecturer in Economics at the University College London and the Polish Academy of Sciences. Also affiliated with the London School of Economics. He is a Co-Director of the Centre for the Study of Places\, Identities and Memories (PIMs) at UCL. His research focuses on socio-economic inequalities and labour economics. He has won multiple international research grants\, founded an expert group – Dobrobyt na Pokolenia and is a member of Concilium Civitas – a group of influential Polish social scientists working abroad. His book\, “Inequalities a’la Polonaise”\, won the Puls Biznesu Scientific Economics Book of the Year 2024 and the Marcin Król Prize 2025\, given for a significant contribution to the humanities and social sciences. \nLubomír Lízal has been a member of the Czech National Bank Board in 2011-2017; the Board is bank governing body and monetary policy committee. Since 1993 he has worked as a researcher at the Economics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. In 2003–2008 he has been Director of both the Economics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences and CERGE\, Charles University. He is a member of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Czech Technical University\, and other scientific boards. He was a member of the National Economic Council of the Government. In years 2018-2019 he has served as the President of the Anglo-American University in Prague. Currently he is an associate professor at the Czech Technical University and at the University of Finance and Administration.\nMr Lízal graduated at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Czech Technical University. In 1998 he obtained a PhD in economics at CERGE\, Charles University and in 2006 he qualified as an associate professor in economics at Charles University. In his research he has focused on transition and environmental economics\, recently also on energy economics. \nJessie Barton Hronešová is a Lecturer in Political Sociology at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies\, UCL\, and Co-Director of the Centre for Study of Places\, Identities and Memories. In her work\, she focuses on victimhood narratives\, the politics of memory\, transitional justice and dealing with the past in Central and Southeast Europe. She is particularly interested in the political uses of emotionally charged and traumatic memories as well as how victims and survivors navigate politics. She is the author of The Struggle of Redress: Victim Capital in Bosnia and Herzegovina (2020) and Post-War Ethno-National Identities of Young People in Bosnia and Herzegovina (2012) and co-editor of The Nexus between Democracy\, Collective Identity Formation\, and EU Enlargement (2011). From 2019 to 2021 she was the ESRC Postdoctoral research Fellow at the University of Oxford and then a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at UNC Chapel Hill and Ca’ Foscari. Outside of academia\, she is a frequent policy advisor and consultant in international development in Central and Southeast Europe. \nPřemysl Pela is the Director of the Czech Centre London and the Programme Director of Czechia EXPO 2025 in Osaka. Premysl has served as the Director of the Czech Center in New York and worked for\, among others\, the Charles University’s CERGE-EI Institute and the Czech Academy of Sciences. In the private sector\, he has held various international top managerial roles. He also headed the Strategy and Innovation Department at the Czech Centre’s HQ in Prague and developed innovative projects presenting scientific creativity through advanced digital technology. SUMMARY:The Sun Can Be: An IPLA Collective Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Sun Can Be: an IPLA collective exhibition\, showcases the works of four young British-based poets operating in the fields of visual poetry\, experimental textual poetry\, text art\, and the asemic. \n\nThe works of the exhibition range from multimedia poetry\, self-portraiture\, and 3D poetry to typewriter art\, lino print\, and a prose-puzzle poem series exhibiting material\, form and method as conveyors of shifting\, alternate realities. From a triptych of calligrams that echo the Surrealism of Guillaume Apollinaire to a series of text art pieces\, to conceptual poetry that reinterprets perspective. The Sun Can Be expands on these themes through unconventional and diversified aesthetics that redefine traditional poetry\, and serves as a translation of the artistic intentions of the IPLA poets.\n\nhttps://inparentheses.cargo.site | Instagram\nIPLA Artists\nCameron Wade\nCameron Wade is a writer and poet based in London. His work explores the nature of storytelling\, the relationship between inner and outer realities\, non-linear storytelling\, and themes of madness\, ‘other’-spaces\, the eerie and the weird; experimenting with ergodic literature and meta-textuality through fiction\, prose-poetry\, visual and asemic poetry\, collage and performance.\n\nDanica Ignacio\nDanica Ignacio is a Filipino poet whose writing focuses on the juxtaposition of the ordinary and the non-ordinary by giving importance to the small. Mainly taking from more traditional forms of poetry\, her work aims to morph the everyday experience just enough to be unrecognisable while still maintaining its form.\n\nEleanor Wilders\nEleanor Wilders finds inspiration from the ignored details of routine and from the in-betweens of the everyday experience\, she crafts stories that question our assumptions about connection\, purpose\, and freedom. Her artistic practice leads to an exploration of exposure in today’s society; her work tries to confront the paradox of vulnerability in an age of hyper-connectivity\, whilst grappling with the tension between authenticity and public persona.\n\nMatthew Sokulsky\nMatthew Sokulsky is concerned with the tense relationship between nature and rational\, theology and logic\, and their ability (or not) to co-exist in the contemporary. A poem from this book has been featured in the annual Best Czech Poetry anthology. He also performs slam poetry and holds the 2019 joint title for duo slam poetry. In 2021 his second poetry collection came out Motýlí pavilon (The Butterfly Pavilion). In 2022 he was nominated for Václav Burian Prize. From 2022 he has worked at Organization for Aid to Refugees (OPU) as a social worker for Ukrainian community. He is a member of a Czech Writers Association. Drawing from fifteen years of rabid activity\, this exhibition evidences the breadth of visual and conceptual poetry from one of the definitive experimentalists of the British 21st century literary scene. \n\nOn the site of the former Notting Hill Books\, a formative space for many\, including Fowler\, this exhibition emphasises the potential of the marginal\, peculiar\, detritus-as-poetry mode so removed from the medium’s stereotypical obsession with neatness\, craft and clarity. DESCRIPTION:During the summer\, the Czech Centre’s Vitrínka Gallery presents a group exhibition showcasing recent works by eight emerging Czech artists from the 2024 Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) residencies. Their cross-disciplinary pieces reflect the town’s rich heritage and spirit of collaboration. \n\nThe Magnus Art Gallery in Prague  launched its residency programme after gaining access to an elegant apartment in an Art Nouveau palace in Karlovy Vary. Designed for two artists at a time\, the residency fosters dialogue between disciplines and encourages creative exchange. \nIn 2024\, seven artist pairs took part\, often blending media—glass with textiles\, sculpture with painting. The town’s distinctive spa town atmosphere and layered history became a powerful source of inspiration. \nInitially shown at the palace’s Display Gallery and later in Prague\, a selection of these pieces now comes to London’s Vitrínka Gallery\, offering a glimpse into how young Czech art flourishes when given space and freedom to experiment. \nArtists exhibiting in London\nAnežka Hošková & Jakub Hošek\nAnežka Hošková’s paintings reflect her romantic vision of Karlovy Vary’s churches\, landscapes\, and mineral springs\, merging meditative experiences with watercolour techniques. Jakub Hošek responded to the city’s uneasy history\, blending beautiful and dark elements into stitched compositions filled with texts\, emotions and urban fragments. \nKaríma Al-Mukhtarová & TEA\nKaríma Al-Mukhtarová explored the transformative symbolism of bathing in a monumental tapestry\, capturing the moment between death\, acceptance and rebirth. TEA created a sculpture of a scribe inspired by Egyptian aesthetics\, integrating fragments of Karíma’s tapestry into the work\, reflecting on shared experience and artistic imprint. \nAnna Jožová & Lucie Rosická\nAnna Jožová and Lucie Rosická investigated materials tied to Karlovy Vary’s nature and culture. Every year\, the picturesque West Bohemian spa town of Karlovy Vary hosts hundreds of filmmakers from around the world while offering audiences the chance to see more than 200 films\, including world premieres in the festival’s official selection and other programme sections. The festival regularly welcomes some of the biggest stars of international cinema.\n\nAlthough KVIFF is a prestigious Category A festival\, it stands out for its open and friendly atmosphere\, which makes it exceptionally welcoming to ordinary filmgoers. This unique spirit is often reflected in the festival’s visual identity\, which has been exclusively designed by Prague-based Studio Najbrt since 1995. DESCRIPTION:The guest of the next edition of the Czech Centre’s Women in Focus series will be Sara Polak\, an archaeologist\, evolutionary anthropologist\, and technology innovator whose work bridges the humanities and cutting-edge AI research.\n\nPolak is a co-founder of the Mobilis Institute and the blockchain educational platform ShellProof\, a Visiting Research Fellow and part-time lecturer at the University of Oxford\, and leads the CCHAOS Research group at the Faculty of Information Technology\, Czech Technical University. Her focus lies in the digitisation of cultural heritage and the simulation of civilisational dynamics. Having spent much of her career in the UK and the USA tech sectors\, Polak is passionate about connecting modern technologies with the humanities. She has been named on Forbes’ 30 Under 30\, was recognised as a Top Innovator (2022)\, and received the Business Revolution Award from the UK Department for International Trade. She believes that only through education and interdisciplinary collaboration can humanity fulfil its potential — and perhaps one day survive on Mars. DESCRIPTION:A legendary film adaptation of Filip Jánský’s novel\, depicting the heroism of Czechoslovak RAF pilots during WWII. \nMarking the 80th anniversary of WWII\, this special screening pays tribute to the courage and sacrifice of all Czechoslovak soldiers who fought for freedom\, particularly those who served in the UK. Based on Filip Jánský’s novel—drawn from his real-life experiences as Czech RAF gunner Richard Husmann and inspired by František Truhlář\, a No. 311 Squadron gunner who later became a fighter pilot—the film offers a gripping and deeply personal portrayal of wartime aviation. \nShot in stark black and white\, Riders of the Sky depicts true historical events through the eyes of a fictional multinational bomber crew from the RAF’s No. 276 Squadron: a Slovak captain\, Pavel; an English co-pilot and navigator; a Canadian radioman; and two Czech gunners\, nicknamed Student and Shorty. Air strikes on German territory become a daily yet perilous routine\, and it is during an attack on Nuremberg that Student is grievously injured. SUMMARY:Understanding the Roots of Populism in Central Europe and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:How have rural uprisings and peasant movements shaped modern Central and Eastern European history—and what can they reveal about populism today? In The Last Peasant War: Violence and Revolution in Twentieth-Century Eastern Europe (Princeton University Press\, 2025)\, historian Jakub Beneš uncovers the forgotten waves of rural unrest that reshaped politics in the era of the world wars. He will be joined by leading historians Mark Cornwall and Claire Morelon to discuss his book’s fresh perspective on twentieth-century Czech and broader European history\, as well as its relevance for understanding today’s political divides. \n\nThe Last Peasant War: Violence and Revolution in Twentieth-Century Eastern Europe\n\nPrinceton University Press\, 2025\n\nSPEAKERS:\n\n\nJakub Beneš is Associate Professor in Central European History at University College London\, School of Slavonic and East European Studies. The Last Peasant War is his second book. He is also the author of the award-winning Workers and Nationalism: Czech and German Social Democracy in Habsburg Austria\, 1890-1918 (Oxford University Press\, 2017). Born in California to Czechoslovak parents\, Beneš has lived and worked in the UK since 2012.\n\nMark Cornwall is Emeritus Professor of Modern European History at the University of Southampton. His books include The Devil’s Wall: The Nationalist Youth Mission of Heinz Rutha (2012) about the Czech-German relationship in the early 20th century. The Czech playwright Jan Mocek has turned The Devil’s Wall into a play – Wandervogel – and it is being performed this year in Prague\, Brno and Nitra.  In 2022\, the Czech Academy of Sciences awarded Mark Cornwall the Palacký Medal for Merit in the Historical Sciences for his work on Czech history. He is now writing a history of treason in the late Habsburg Empire\, and also researching the Czechoslovak security police in the last years of communism.\n\nClaire Morelon is Lecturer in Modern European History at the University of Manchester. She is the author of Streetscapes of War and Revolution: Prague\, 1914-1920  (Cambridge University Press\, 2024). She was awarded the 2020 Stanley Z. Pech Prize by the Czechoslovak Studies Association for an article on the requisition of church bells during the First World War. SUMMARY:Identity - The Story of Czech Graphic Design
DESCRIPTION:Graphic design—including posters\, books\, magazines\, logos\, orientation systems\, and even national symbols—plays a crucial role in shaping the identity of every nation. For the Czech Republic (and formerly Czechoslovakia)\, the history of graphic design since the early 20th century has been particularly complex. The Czechs had to fight for their own statehood\, endure two world wars\, navigate two totalitarian regimes\, and transition from a socialist planned economy to a market economy. \n\nThrough original works and reproductions\, visitors to the exhibition will explore the most significant achievements in Czech graphic design and learn about their creators. Accompanied by detailed texts\, the exhibition positions these works within their broader cultural\, historical\, and political contexts\, showcasing the power of graphic design to influence society and reflect societal changes.\n\nCurated by  Filip Blažek and Linda Kudrnovská\, in collaboration with commissioner David Korecký\, the exhibition is part of the multi-genre project Identity – The Story of Czech Graphic Design(www.projektidentita.cz). This ambitious initiative also includes a seven-part television series\, a feature film\, and a bilingual monograph (published in Czech and English) under the same title.\n\nThe traveling exhibition Identity is a collaboration between by Typo\, the Mowshe Studio\, the Museum of Literature\, and the Czech Centres network.
