SUMMARY:GOYA NETWORK
DESCRIPTION:The lecture by Paula Fayos will first explore Francisco de Goya’s influence on 19th-century French art and literature\, and the mechanisms that enabled the dissemination and reception of his work. Drawing on Fayos Pérez’s recent book\, the talk examines how French audiences interpreted Goya as an embodiment of exotic\, literary Spain\, as well as a caricaturist\, a politically engaged artist who rebelled against authority. The book also presents the first catalogue of the copies of Eugène Delacroix after Goya’s Caprichos. \nThis research revealed hundreds of individuals—artists\, writers\, collectors and patrons—who acted as intermediaries\, interpreters and promoters of Goya’s work. A direct product of this scholarship\, the Goya Network\, brings these figures to the centre of the analysis. Developed from over a decade of art-historical research\, now combined with tools from Digital Humanities\, the Goya Network is an interactive\, collaborative database that visualises the personal and professional relationships among all these agents linked to Goya—so far focused on Spain and France. From the Madrazo family to Victor Hugo’s cenacle and the Parisian salonnières\, the platform maps the sociability structures that built Goya’s legacy. Continuously expanding\, the Goya Network aims to become a standard research tool for scholars\, curators\, lecturers and students. Event in English and chaired by Manuela B. Mena Marqués. \nPaula Fayos Pérez holds a PhD in Art History from the University of Cambridge (2019)\, funded by a Leslie Wilson Scholarship (Magdalene College)\, supervised by Jean Michel Massing. Her doctoral thesis has recently been published as Goya’s Caprichos in Nineteenth-Century France: Politics of the Grotesque (CEEH\, 2024). She worked as a researcher at Apsley House (London) and has since held various postdoctoral positions funded by NextGenerationEU\, the BBVA Foundation (Leonardo Grant)\, and currently the Gerda Henkel Foundation. During these fellowships\, she has taught at the universities of Strasbourg and Madrid (Complutense) and organised the international seminar Goya: Grotesque/Collecting (2023). Recently\, she has delivered lectures at the Musée Delacroix in Paris and the Museo del Prado (Programa Joven 2025)\, and has published in academic journals such as The Burlington Magazine\, Boletín del Museo del Prado\, and Print Quarterly. \nManuela B. Mena Marqués holds a PhD in Art History from the Complutense University of Madrid\, where she completed her doctoral dissertation on Italian drawing and painting. She has organized and participated in numerous national and international exhibitions\, among which the following stand out: Murillo (1982\, in collaboration with the Royal Academy\, London); Monsters\, Dwarfs\, and Buffoons at the Court of the Habsburgs; Goya and the Spirit of the Enlightenment (1989\, with the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York); Velázquez (1990); Ribera (1992); Goya: Caprice and Invention. Cabinet Paintings\, Sketches\, and Miniatures (1994\, in collaboration with Juliet Wilson-Bareau); Manet at the Prado (2003); and Francis Bacon (in collaboration with Tate Modern\, London\, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York). She served as a member of the Board for the Classification\, Valuation\, and Export of Heritage Assets of the Spanish Ministry of Culture\, and has been a member of ICOM and of the Scientific Committee of the Musée Goya in Castres (France) since 1981. She is also an honorary member of the Hispanic Society of America in New York\, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Fundación Goya en Aragón\, and\, since 2010\, a member of the Advisory Committee on Visual Arts of the Botín Foundation. She taught at the Autonomous University of Madrid and simultaneously collaborated with the Museo del Prado on the publication of its collection of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Italian drawings. In 1981\, she obtained\, through a competitive civil service examination\, the position of Curator of Drawings and Prints at the Prado Museum\, where she served as Deputy Director for Conservation and Research from 1986 to 1991 and as a member of the Royal Board of Trustees from 1991 to 1996. She subsequently held the position of Head of Conservation for Eighteenth-Century Painting and Goya until 2021. She has received several distinctions\, including the Silver Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts\, the Encomienda of the Order of Isabella the Catholic\, the Encomienda of the Order of Civil Merit\, the rank of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE)\, and the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. In 2019\, she was awarded the Prize of the Friends of the Prado Museum Foundation. She currently resides in London with her family and continues to be engaged in research on specific topics in Art History\, as well as in delivering lectures in her field of expertise.

The show interweaves archival materials with poetic interpretation\, bringing Lorca’s spirit into the present while reflecting on themes of repression\, creativity\, and cultural identity. More than a commemoration\, it invites audiences to rediscover the poet’s relevance today\, honoring not only his tragic death in 1936 but also the timeless vitality of his words.\n\n \n\nThis event consists of two lectures: one on la Generación del 27 and the importance of La Residencia de Estudiantes de Madrid for Spanish culture\, and the second one on the exhibition Lorca and the Archive: Memory in Motion\, curated by Andrew A. Anderson\, Melissa Dinverno and Christopher Maurer.\n\nLectures by Dr. Melissa Dinverno —Associate Professor of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese\, Indiana University Bloomington and curator of the exhibition Lorca and The Archive\, on show at La Residencia de Estudiantes de Madrid\, and Dr. Stephen Roberts— Professor from the School of Cultures\, Languages and Area Studies\, Department of Spanish\, Portuguese and Latin American Studies – Nottingham University.\n\n \n\n¨”The Residencia de Estudiantes and the Generation of 1927″\n\nLecture by Stephen Roberts\n\nThis talk will provide an overview of an educational institution and a literary movement that have become symbols of the cultural splendour of pre-Civil War Spain.\n\nThe Residencia de Estudiantes\, founded in 1910\, was an experimental educational space where university students lived and studied alongside their lecturers and enjoyed talks by invited speakers such as Miguel de Unamuno and José Ortega y Gasset\, Marie Curie\, Albert Einstein\, Stravinsky\, Keynes and Le Corbusier. It also brought together budding artists such as Luis Buñuel\, Salvador Dalí and Federico García Lorca and was one of the iconic spaces associated with the incubation of what became known as the poetic Generation of 1927.\n\nThis Generation\, whose centenary we are soon to mark\, owes its name to the commemoration in December 1927 of the 300th anniversary of the death of Golden Age poet Luis de Góngora\, whose densely metaphorical verse offered young poets such as Alberti\, Cernuda\, Guillén\, Bergamín\, Altolaguirre\, Alonso and Lorca a means of breaking free from the Romantic and Symbolist idiom of their elders and of their own youthful verse. But the Generation of 1927 was not just about poetry or about this group of male poets. It also involved women poets such as Concha Méndez and Ernestina de Champourcín and a whole host of painters\, musicians\, composers\, dancers\, actors\, directors\, puppeteers\, set designers and philosophers who often worked alongside and collaborated with Lorca and his poet friends. The talk will pay homage to this strikingly creative and vibrant generation of artists.\n\n \n\nStorytelling Archives: García Lorca and ‘Memory in Motion’\n\nLecture by Melissa Dinverno\n\nLorca and the Archive: Memory in Motion is a major museum exhibit that is currently in Madrid (April 24-July 26\, 2026) at the renowned Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid\, Spain\, where Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) once lived and studied. Curated by Lorca scholars Andrew A. Anderson (University of Virginia)\, Melissa Dinverno (Indiana University) and Christopher Maurer (Boston University)\, it tells for the first time the story of the construction of the Lorca Foundation archive since its inception in 1936\, using its own materials to activate and sew together stories of salvage\, discovery\, acquisition\, loss\, and perseverance. Through over 350 pieces\, of which approximately 70% of which are unpublished or rarely seen\, it tells the human stories behind the archive’s making\, revealing the complicated political and cultural contexts that people navigated through war\, exile and transitional democracy. This talk gives us a glimpse into this major exhibit\, the stories behind it\, and some of its signature pieces\, bringing the audience closer to the insights it offers and to the way it impacts our understanding of Lorca.\n\n \n\nLorca and the Archive: Memory in Motion\n\nA writer’s archive is a storehouse of history and possibilities. It is the fertile soil from which verse\, prose\, and a constantly evolving vision of their work spring forth\, as well as the material trace of that work and the life journey of the writer\, his family\, and his friends. The Archive of the Fundación Federico García Lorca is the most complex and diverse of the many dedicated to the poet\, located in Spain and abroad. Although it has been meticulously catalogued\, to date no one has studied its history\, its rich present\, and the gaps left by war\, exile\, and state intervention.\n\nLorca and the Archive: Memory in Motion begins the process of recovering this hitherto unknown history: the evolution of the archive from the poet’s death to the present day. As “memory in motion”\, the exhibition —like the archive itself— highlights the efforts of those who created it and the sociopolitical contexts in which it was produced. It recounts for the first time the various stages it went through: a story of loss and salvation\, discovery and perseverance. Based on new and rigorous research in personal\, family\, and state archives\, it looks both to the past and to new possibilities in the future.\n\n*\n\nStephen Roberts is Professor in Modern Spanish Literature and Intellectual History at the University of Nottingham. He has published on Spanish thought (Unamuno\, Ortega)\, the finisecular novel (Galdós\, Baroja\, Valle-Inclán)\, poetry (Juan Ramón Jiménez\, Lorca\, Neruda)\, Spanish exiles in Great Britain\, and cinema (Bardem\, Erice). He is the author of Deep Song. The Life and Work of Federico García Lorca (Reaktion Press\, 2020). He is currently researching the foreign policy of the Miguel Primo de Rivera Dictatorship (1923-1930) and is leading an international British Academy/Leverhulme project entitled The Limits of Liberalism: Lessons from Spain.\n\nMelissa Dinverno is a professor of Spanish Literature at Indiana University (U.S.A.). She has published Lorca y el archivo: Diálogos con el porvenir (2024) and essays on Spanish literature and film\, García Lorca\, cultural memory and editorial theory. She is editor of the critical reconstruction of García Lorca’s Suites (in preparation)\, curator of Suites and the Voyage of Perception (2020 Centro Federico García Lorca\, Granada) and\, with Andrew A. Anderson and Christopher Maurer\, co-curator of Lorca and the Archive: Memory in Motion (2024-25 Centro Federico García Lorca\, Granada; 2026 Residencia de Estudiantes\, Madrid). His debut English collection\, Ballad of a Happy Immigrant (2021)\, was a Poetry Book Society Wild Card Choice. Boix is editor and lead translator of Hemisferio Cuir\, introducing English readers to major Latin American voices.\n\nLuisa De la Concha Montes is a writer and photographer from Mexico City who now resides in London. Her work attempts to bring shapeless states such as grief\, diaspora\, identity\, and memory into physical form through visual poetry\, documentary photography and digital curation. Her writing has been showcased at the National Poetry Library\, and published in the collective zine Lenguas Enredadas\, Shado Magazine\, The Big Ship\, amongst many other publications.\n\nJosé Buera is a Caribbean/Latinx writer from the Dominican Republic. An alumni of the London Library’s Emerging Writers Programme (24/25)\, his poetry appears in Magma\, Propel\, Southword\, Wasafiri and elsewhere. José is the founder and curator of Empanada Poetry Salon\, a bimonthly gathering of diaspora poets amidst their foods.\n\nPatrizia Longhitano Patrizia Longhitano is a pansexual immigrant poet who spent her childhood between Brazil and Italy.\n\nShe is currently the manager of Poetry Pharmacy bookshop\, a board member of Magma and the host of Venn Diagrams. DESCRIPTION:Instituto Cervantes in collaboration with the Oxford Literary Festival\, presents El niño y la bestia (The Boy and the Beast)\, a performance based on the short story of the same name by author Elvira Lindo. \n\nIn this performance\, Lindo narrates a story inspired by her father’s childhood\, when he was sent to live with an aunt in a Madrid devastated in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. She is accompanied by musicians Olatz Ruiz de Gordejuea on violin\, Salvador Bolón on cello\, Ander Perrino on double bass\, and María Lindo—artistic director of the project—on English horn.\n\nElvira Lindo is a journalist and writer. Her children’s books featuring the character Manolito are considered classics of Spanish children’s literature and include Manolito on the Road and Manolito Four-Eyes: The 1st Volume of the Great Encyclopedia of My Life. She is a recipient of Spain’s National Prize for Children’s Literature. Her works for adults include Open Heart.

DESCRIPTION:Instituto Cervantes in London\, in collaboration with National Heritage\, the Gallery of the Royal Collections\, and The Royal Collection Trust\, presents a lecture dedicated to the exhibition on Queen Victoria Eugenie at the Gallery of the Royal Collections in Madrid.\n\nThe event offers an illuminating journey through the life\, legacy\, and public image of one of the most distinctive figures of modern Spanish monarchy. Through the pieces featured in the exhibition—portraits\, personal objects\, clothing\, documents\, photographs\, and artworks related to her life—the presentations will offer the audience a multidimensional view of a queen whose biography was shaped by historical tensions\, social transformations\, and personal challenges.\n\nVictoria Eugenie of Battenberg\, born in Scotland in 1887 and Queen Consort of Spain following her marriage to Alfonso XIII in 1906\, lived through a decisive period in European history: the rapid modernization of cities\, the emergence of new artistic sensibilities\, the rise of the mass media\, and the profound political changes that culminated in the Second Republic and her subsequent exile. The lecture examines how the exhibition brings these contexts together to portray not only the institutional figure\, but also the woman\, wife\, and mother who had to adapt to an often-hostile environment.\n\nThe lecture will also highlight the museographic contribution of the Gallery of the Royal Collections\, emphasizing how the exhibition uses visual and narrative resources to bring closer to visitors a figure who remains largely unknown to the general public. In this sense\, the exhibition becomes not only a historical journey\, but also an invitation to reflect on the role of women in monarchy\, the construction of memory\, and the dialogue between past and present.\n\nThe presentations will be given by:\n\n 	Víctor Cageao – Director at National Heritage\, who will speak about the Royal Collections and National Heritage.\n 	Alessandro Nasini – Senior Curator of Photographs at Royal Collection Trust\, who will discuss the collection of photographs from Queen Victoria Eugenie’s childhood and youth.\n 	Arantxa Domingo and Reyes Utrera\, the exhibition’s curators\, who will speak about the exhibition.\n\nEvents in English and Spanish with an English interpreter.

DESCRIPTION:Brenda Navarro in conversation with Silvia Quin Rothlisberger\n\n\n\nCervantes Institute of London and Manchester\, in collaboration with the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics at Trinity College\, University of Cambridge\, present the tour introducing the English translation of the book Cenizas en la boca – Eating Ashes by author Brenda Navarro. \nBrenda will take part in talks in Manchester\, Cambridge\, and London\, where she will discuss the writing process of her book\, its themes\, and her career as a writer. \nThe London event will be chaired by journalist Silvia Quin Rothlisberger. \nAfter the talk\, copies of the book will be available for purchase. \nSynopsis of Cenizas en la boca \nDiego jumps from a fifth-floor window\, and since then\, that image keeps drilling into his sister’s mind: six seconds and a body crashing to the ground. She is the one who looks back and tells the story of the two siblings. Their arrival into a world where life was never fair. The years they spent in Mexico with their grandparents while their mother tried to make a living in Spain\, and she\, still a child\, was the one who took care of Diego. The stage in Madrid\, a city they didn’t understand and that didn’t understand them either. The first separation\, when she left for Barcelona to make her way and her brother stayed behind in the place he hated most. And her return\, carrying Diego’s ashes\, to a Mexico very different from the one she remembered. \nThis novel narrates the emotional journey of a young woman who senses the reasons behind her teenage brother’s suicide and experiences her own “Ulysses syndrome\,” where neither departure nor return is truly a destination. A story of separations and abandonments\, of longing and rage\, of loss and initiation into life\, in which Brenda Navarro tackles elusive issues such as inequality\, xenophobia\, and uprooting with enormous courage\, confirming her as one of the most powerful and daring voices in contemporary literature. Intense\, visceral\, and devastating\, Cenizas en la boca is a book that burns and poses the painful question of what life is worth living. \nBRENDA NAVARRO is one of the most critically acclaimed authors writing in Spanish. Her first novel\, Casas vacías (Empty Houses)\, won the Tigre Juan Prize. Cenizas en la boca received the Cálamo and CEGAL awards\, as well as the Madrid Booksellers’ Prize\, and was a finalist for the Mario Vargas Llosa Biennial Novel Prize. Brenda is a screenwriter and a regular contributor to El País and other media outlets. Originally from Mexico City\, she lives in Madrid. \nMEGAN McDOWELL has translated many of today’s most important Latin American writers. Her work has received the National Book Award for Translated Literature\, the English PEN Award\, the Valle-Inclán Prize\, and two O. Henry Awards\, and she has been nominated for the International Booker Prize four times. Her short story translations have appeared in The New Yorker\, The Paris Review\, Granta\, and others. She lives in Chile. \nSilvia Quin Rothlisberger\, Colombian journalist\, writer and broadcaster based in London. Her work has appeared in Wasafiri Magazine\, The White Review\, Songlines Magazine\, The Guardian\, among others. As a journalist Silvia has been telling the stories of the Latin American community in London for the past 14 years in print\, radio and documentary. Her short stories have been published in anthologies for emerging writers by El Ojo de la Cultura and Comma Press. She currently works for the Guardian. \nEvent in English.
