SUMMARY:Athens Tales: Athens in Literature and Song
DESCRIPTION:Join the book launch and discussion of Athens Tales\, an anthology of one hundred and fifty years of Greek short fiction about Athens\, compiled and translated into English by Joshua Barley. The evening will include an illustrated presentation of the book by the translator\, and an accompanying performance of Athenian songs by mezzo-soprano Alexandra Achillea.  \nThis is the main UK launch of Athens Tales\, recently published by Oxford University Press. The book is an anthology of the last one hundred and fifty years of Greek short fiction about Athens\, comprising eighteen authors from representative periods of the city’s modern history. There are stories of war and migration\, love stories and other vignettes of Athenian life\, through which the reader traces the multiple transformations of the Greek capital. With each author bringing their own perspective as well as style\, the anthology is both an introduction to modern Greek literature as well as a portrait of Athens through its writers. At this event\, the book’s creator and translator\, Joshua Barley\, will give an illustrated talk weaving together some of the anthology’s lesser-known authors with the modern history of the city. He will be joined by special guests including the singer Alexandra Achillea\, who will perform a selection of twentieth-century Athenian songs with piano accompaniment.

SUMMARY:Kalamoti: A Medieval Village on Chios Island
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the book launch and discussion on the book Kalamoti: A Medieval Village of Chios. Kalamoti combines architecture with history\, highlighting current issues surrounding the preservation of cultural heritage. SUMMARY:UK Premiere: Mary\, Marianna\, Maria: The Unsung Greek Years of Callas
DESCRIPTION:“A fascinating\, as well as moving film\, bound to be a revelation for many people” – Marie-Aude Roux\, Le Monde  \nJoin us for the UK premiere of Mary\, Marianna\, Maria: The Unsung Greek Years of Callas. The documentary sheds light on Maria Callas’ life in Greece during her early years and her coming of age as a woman and as an artist in Athens during World War II and the years after 1957 when the internationally renowned diva reconnected with Greece.  \nThe Greek National Opera’s documentary\, conceived\, researched\, and written by Vasilis Louras\, directed by Michalis Asthenidis and Vasilis Louras\, and produced by Stella Angeletou\, brings to light valuable archival material and reveals\, for the first time\, the last rehearsal recording that Maria Callas made at her home in Paris a month prior to her passing.  Her foremost artistic achievements and little-known debuts\, the figures who influenced her\, and the major landmarks in her development as an artist are all explored – as well as  the prevailing social and political circumstances in Greece during World War II\, the Greek Civil War milieu of the 1940s and 19’50s\, and the unjust attacks she endured. These key narrative threads tell the story of the troubled\, novel-like life of Callas\, who always walked the line between tragedy and triumph.  \nThis documentary seeks to tell the story of Callas’ early years – the story of a triumph achieved through strength of character and talent\, hard work and dedication\, a story that saw her defy every difficulty and the abusive behaviour she faced. We are delighted that a discussion and Q&A with directors Vasilis Louras and Michalis Asthenidis and producer Stella Angeletou will follow the screening.  \nThe event is supported by AEGEAN\, the Hellenic Centre’s official air carrier.  \nImage credit: Still from the documentary Mary\, Marianna\, Maria: The Unsung Greek Years of Callas

SUMMARY:Her Voice: A Celebration of the Women of Classical Music
DESCRIPTION:Following their sold-out performance in 2023\, the Waldstein Trio return to the Hellenic Centre with a powerful programme celebrating the often overlooked\, yet extraordinary legacy of women composers from the 19th century to the present day. \nFrom Clara Schumann to Valentina Scheldhofen Ciardelli\, this concert traces over 200 years of remarkable creativity\, showcasing the unique and compelling voices of women who composed against the grain of a male-dominated musical tradition. For too long\, their contributions were dismissed\, marginalised\, or forgotten—pushed to the periphery of concert repertoire and historical recognition. \nYet these composers\, through resilience and brilliance\, challenged the barriers set before them. Their works are filled with emotional depth\, originality\, and artistic power. This performance honours their legacy and affirms the importance of restoring women’s rightful place in the classical canon. \nJoin us in celebrating the female creative spirit—through its music\, its resilience\, and its long-overdue recognition.

SUMMARY:Jewish Music from the Hellenic Region
DESCRIPTION:Cantor Assaf Levitin is joined by pianist Naaman Wagner for an evening of deeply moving and timeless music. This concert journeys through the rich tapestry of Jewish musical heritage\, shaped by the Hellenic world\, ancient mythology\, and the enduring symbolism of the sea as a vessel of connection\, exile\, and return.  \nThe programme interweaves stories of displacement\, memory\, and belonging\, linking ancient voices with modern echoes across the shifting tides of time and culture. Alberto Hemsi’s Coplas Sefardies evoke the Judeo-Spanish heritage of Thessaloniki and Crete. Works by Fauré\, Schubert\, Barber\, and Ireland delve into the mythic and emotional depths of the sea\, conjuring themes of burden\, illusion\, and yearning. Contemporary songs by Yehuda Poliker and Corinne Alal explore memory\, migration\, and post-Holocaust identity with raw emotional power.  \nFrom haunting Sephardic ballads to rock music\, this concert offers a heartfelt musical tribute to the enduring Jewish presence in the Hellenic world.  \nThe event is supported by the Goethe-Institut London

SUMMARY:Echo: Dorothy Cross in Conversation with Iwona Blazwick
DESCRIPTION:For the third conversation of Echo\, curator Iwona Blazwick speaks with Irish artist Dorothy Cross about her work and how her forms and images resonate with myth and metamorphosis. Being human in relation to the natural world is a motif running through the sculpture\, film & photography of Cross\, connecting her work with the animist beliefs of the ancient world. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session.  \nCross came to prominence in the 1990s with her use of the skins and udders of cows to create surreal draped figures reminiscent of Christian statuary. Throughout her career she has continued to cast animal\, plant and human forms – ranging from jellyfish and foxgloves to skulls and fingers – making sculptures and films that create metamorphic synergies between us and non-human species. Most recently Cross has turned to carving marble\, the material of Antiquity. Sourcing an astonishing range of geological colours and striations\, she carves exquisitely rendered feet as part of the stone yet emerging from it.  Rather than pairs of feet\, single or multiple feet are captured in the act of walking\, like the petrified ghosts of our ancestors. She has commented. ‘Good art should make you consider yourself in relation to time\, which means in relation to birth\, life and death’. Dorothy Cross’ oeuvre resonates with the winged or four legged gods and goddesses of Greco-Roman statuary and with ancient systems of belief where the non-human world was understood as sentient and magical.    \nImage: Dorothy Cross\, Poll Na bPéist\, 2008\, Archival pigment print

SUMMARY:RUSH(ES) by Alexandra Bachzetsis
DESCRIPTION:RUSH(ES) is a compelling new solo performance by renowned Greek-Swiss visual artist and choreographer Alexandra Bachzetsis. Conceived as an introspective journey\, RUSH(ES) confronts behavioural taboos and interrogates the commodification of desire — constructed and deconstructed through the moving body.    \nRUSH(ES) is characterised by rapid transformations that push the body to its limits\, reflecting pleasure\, joy\, solitude and anxiety through the intense physicality of the performer. In the process of corporeal metamorphosis\, Bachzetsis navigates her body so that it ceases to be human and morphs into something else – an animal\, an object\, a tool.  \nIn this solo performance\, the audience is invited to perceive\, examine and experience these physical transformations as a reflection of the collective consciousness. RUSH(ES) thus aims to evoke intuitive\, immediate responses to music\, space\, text and the actions of the body\, taking both performer and audience into a heightened state of awareness and transformation.  \nBlending autofiction and auto–documentation\, the piece invites both performer and audience into a heightened state of awareness and transformation.  \nThe performance will take place on Thursday 16 and Friday 17 October 2025 at 19:00. This is the London premiere of RUSH(ES) and spaces are limited.

SUMMARY:BOOKMORPHS: Artists’ Books from Greece & the UK
DESCRIPTION:The interactive exhibition BOOKMORPHS: Artists’ Books from Greece & the UK brings together a diverse selection of artists’ books\, book works\, book-art objects\, limited and multiple editions\, ephemera\, and journals by 44 visual artists\, curators\, publishers\, and theorists from both Greece and the UK. It marks the first comprehensive presentation in London of contemporary artists’ books by Greek and British visual artists in dialogue.  \nBOOKMORPHS borrows its title from a term used by art writer Michael Hampton and aims to foster dialogue and exchange between Greek and British artists.  \nShowcasing a wide range of techniques and media – painting\, printmaking\, drawing\, writing\, poetry\, digital printing\, cutting\, bookbinding\, sculpture\, sound\, and photography – the exhibition highlights the rich materiality and experimental nature of the book as an artistic form.  \nWhat happens when a book’s legibility is disrupted? BOOKMORPHS invites audiences to engage with books through unconventional forms of ‘reading’: holding\, touching\, activating. Here\, books transform into vehicles of unique\, interactive experiences\, allowing visitors to explore the anatomy of the book and connect more intimately with its content.  \nIn re-examining the meaning and history of the codex\, these works address a range of social\, political\, cultural\, ecological\, and gender issues. Personal narratives and subversive themes are reimagined in the artists’ book format\, expanding the ways books can be created\, read\, and understood as cultural artefacts.  \nThe various objects presented in BOOKMORPHS continue to abide by typical bibliographic references\, even though an artist’s book presents a disruption to conventional literary structures. In an age of screen reading and doom-scrolling\, this exhibition seeks to preserve a tactile connection with the book – as text\, as layered object\, and as interactive form.   \nParticipating artists: Eleni Angelou\, Nikos Arvanitis\, Rania Bellou\, David Blackmore\, Sarah Bodman\, Ismini Bonatsou\, BOOKEND – Matt Hale & Nick Cash\, Maria Bourbou\, Thodoros Brouskomatis\, Jonathan Callan\, Natassa Chelioti – Naga\, Ioanna Delfino\, Joe Devlin\, Anna Dimitriou\, Stephen Emmerson\, SJ Fowler\, Michael Hampton\, Rowena Hughes\, Inscription Journal (Gill Partington\, Simon Morris\, Adam Smyth)\, Antonia Iroidou\, Eleni Kastrinogianni\, Peggy Kliafa\, Alexia Kokkinou\, Georgia Kotretsos\, Nikos Kryonidis\, Vasiliki Lefkaditi\, Eleni Maragaki\, Kyriaki Mavrogeorgi\, Despina Meimaroglou\, Christina Mitrentse\, Fiona Mouzakitis\, Kiki Perivolari\, Stamatis Schizakis\, Ifigeneia Sdoukou\, Christina Sgouromiti\, Danai Simou\, Dimitris Skourogiannis\, Annetta Spanoudaki\, Nectarios Stamatopoulos\, Despina Stavrou\, Aris Stoidis\, Evangelos Tasios\, Yannis Tzortzis\, Leonie Yagdjoglou.   \nCurated by Project 2 Athens (Fiona Mouzakitis & Despina Stavrou) and Christina Mitrentse. \nCo-organised and hosted by the Hellenic Centre.  \nLead sponsor Captain Vassilis and Carmen Constantakopoulos Foundation. With the support of The A. G. Leventis Foundation. SUMMARY:Call Me Stratos: In Conversation with the author
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of Chrysoula Georgoula’s debut novel\, followed by a discussion on modern challenges in Greece and a Q&A session. Call Me Stratos follows a man profoundly impacted by Greece’s financial crisis. The novel offers a powerful glimpse into the country’s recent turbulent history—from the Olympic Games to the economic collapse—highlighting the struggles of the working class.\n\nAfter a dramatic divorce\, and at the age of forty-two\, Stratos Achtidis returns to his family home to live with his mother and brother. Humiliated and feeling isolated from family and friends\, he turns to alcohol and reminisces about an over-glorified past. Through Stratos’s eyes\, the reader witnesses the social and economic transformations that have shaped Greek society over the past twenty-five years. The novel explores the struggles of ordinary working-class Greeks\, who have faced profound existential and financial challenges\, and the resulting shifts in their way of life.  \n\nGeorgoula delivers a pitch-perfect portrayal of the male psyche—particularly a certain kind of Greek male—with often brutal authenticity. Call Me Stratos is not just a compelling read; it is a powerful depiction of some of the most significant issues affecting Greek society.\n\nThe conversation will be led by Dr. Liana Giannakopoulou\, Senior Research Fellow at the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics\, University of Cambridge.’ \n\nIn collaboration with Istros books.

SUMMARY:MY DEAR ELEKTRA by Arianna Economou

SUMMARY:Photographer John Donat in 1960s Crete
DESCRIPTION:Travelling to Crete after completing his studies at the Architectural Association\, John Donat found on the island the inspiration to redirect his career from architecture to photography – as he put it\, Crete set him free. Initially attracted by the prospect of recording the outstanding byzantine frescoes of the local churches\, Donat soon also turned his attention to the landscape and the towns’ streetscape. He became fascinated by all aspects of life on the island\, from the many traditional crafts to the religious festivities. It is indeed in Crete that he started to explore the theme that would become the leitmotif of his work\, the relationship between buildings and the people who inhabit them. Donat was to become one of the foremost British architectural photographers of his generation by capturing the built environment with a social documentary\, almost photojournalistic approach. He always valued his experience in Crete and\, many years later\, he managed to publish his beautiful images of the island in the book Crete 1960 (Crete University Press\, 1999) and display them at the Hellenic Centre in The Real Crete exhibition (2001). \n\nValeria Carullo\, Photographs Curator at the Royal Institute of British Architects\, presents Donat’s work. Q&A will follow the presentation.  \nTickets: £3/2 concession\, free for Members\n\n\nBooking required via Eventbrite\n or 020 7487 5060

SUMMARY:The Music of Asia Minor: Presenting Violin Legends Semsis & Ogdontakis
DESCRIPTION:In this year’s Rebetiko Carnival\, violonist Kyriakos Gouventas and a group of brilliant musicians present the work of master violinists Dimitris Semsis (Salonikios) and Ioannis Dragatsis (Ogdontakis). Reviving the precious music of Santourovioli\, the combination of violin\, santur and guitar\, this evening will introduce you to the early rebetiko music of Asia Minor. \n\nDuring the great population movement in the southern Balkans in the early 20th century\, seminal artists from Constantinople\, Smyrna and the coasts of Asia Minor settled on the Greek islands and ports. Among them\, great music masters such as Dimitris Semsis (Salonikios) and Ioannis Dragatsis (Ogdontakis) came to Greece\, bringing along their sound and becoming leading figures in the local music scene.  \n\nTheir captivating performances and recordings made them legendary figures in the history of world music. The main instruments in Early Rebetika are violin\, santur\, guitar\, kanun\, oud and tampoura. Santurovioli is a minimal combination of violin\, santur and guitar. These three form an impressively functional musical system where the microtonal use of the violin shines brightly in the rich harmonics of the santur over a solid bass-guitar rhythmical background. Today\, there are only a few grand masters in the genre and Kyriakos Gouventas is considered the leading figure worldwide. \n\nCo–organised with Rebetiko Carnival.\n\nTickets: £16/12 concession or £20 at the door | Booking via Ticket Tailor\nor 020 7487 5060

SUMMARY:The Divided Island: Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:The Divided Island brings the Cyprus issue into sharp focus\, attempting an objective perspective on this complex and long-standing conflict. With Nicosia remaining Europe’s last divided capital\, the documentary explores the aftermath of the 1974 conflict\, which left the North predominantly inhabited by Turkish Cypriots and the South by Greek Cypriots. After 50 years of stalled negotiations\, the question remains: will the island ever reunite?  \nAmid the ongoing wars against Ukraine and Palestine\, the frozen divide in Cyprus has often been forgotten. The Divided Island challenges the hostile narratives commonly seen in mainstream media\, instead seeking the truth through deeply personal interviews with those whose lives\, homes\, and country were torn apart\, alongside the voices of young Cypriots yearning for  reconciliation.  \nThis debut feature documentary is directed by Turkish Cypriot Cey Sesiguzel and co-produced by Greek Cypriot Andreas Tokkallos\, the founders of the award-winning London-based production company\, Two Fresh Productions. By offering a nuanced and unbiased understanding of the Cyprus issue\, The Divided Island fosters a narrative of hope for a peaceful future and a resolution to the ‘Cyprus problem.’  \nDirector: Cey Sesiguzel  \nProducer: Andreas Tokkallos  \nRunning Time:  90 Minutes  \nCert: 15  \nThe Q&A will be hosted by BFI Digital Production Editor and Film Programmer Georgia Korossi.  \nTickets\n\n£6/4 concession\nBooking required via Eventbrite or 020 7487 5060

SUMMARY:Choreographer Eliane Roumié: 25km\, a site-specific project
DESCRIPTION:Choreographer Eliane Roumié presents 25km\, a site-specific project inspired by the Eleusinian Mysteries and the city of Eleusis. At the heart of this work is the integration of walking as a ritual\, inviting reflection on the profound shifts in contemporary life. From the refugee crisis to the loss of nature and social isolation\, Roumié explores the emotional and social landscapes that shape our world today. \n\nBorn and raised in Athens\, Roumié is an artist of Greek and Syrian descent. Drawing from her dual heritage\, she often finds herself in a state of ‘in-between\,’ where themes of transition and identity serve as key sources of inspiration. In 25km\, she reflects on these shifts in contemporary life through the lens of ritual. Using a collective\, long-duration walk as a primary means of exploration\, the project connects the ancient ritual of the Eleusinian Mysteries with urgent contemporary issues. \n\nIn 25km\, four women embark on a silent\, 25-kilometer journey\, retracing the steps of the Ancient Greeks in search of new personal and collective meanings. The project delves into the profound experience of walking\, investigating how this ritualistic act can be translated into dance. The exploration is further expressed through an artistic documentary\, a visual map\, and a dance performance\, inviting audiences to reconsider the relevance of such a journey in today’s world.  \n\nThe discussion will be followed by Q&A. \n\nImage: Konstantinos Kalavrezos \nTickets: £3/2 concession\, free for Members\n\n\nBooking required via Eventbrite\n or 020 7487 5060
