SUMMARY:MY DEAR ELEKTRA by Arianna Economou
DESCRIPTION:MY DEAR ELEKTRA is inspired by the journey of British surrealist artist\, writer and occultist Ithell Colquhoun (1906–1988) to Cyprus. She arrived in the summer of 1951 to visit her friend and fellow artist from her days at the Slade School of Art\, Elektra Megaw (1907 – 1993) and her husband Peter\, the then Director of the Department of Antiquities.     \n\nIn this performance\, Economou attempts a parallel journey in search of sacred landscapes and the divine feminine\, across the terrain of the island of Cyprus\, trying to map out the journey and possible places Megaw and Colquhoun could have visited.  \n\nThe performance is built on seven imaginary letters written by Arianna Economou addressed to Elektra Megaw\, where she accounts the experiences\, memories and reflections\, that came up during her visits to Cyprus\, in relation to the bigger oeuvre of Colquhoun.  \n\nEconomou met Elektra Megaw through their common friend\, ceramicist Lionel Miskin. \n\nThe performance is inspired by the artworks Colquhoun made with Cyprus as stimulus.  \n\nDirection / Choreography / Performer: Arianna Economou  \n\nMusic: Giorgos Bizios  \n\nVisuals / Scenic Design/ performer: Charis Iacovou   \n\nVideo Art Film: Artemis Evlogimenou    \n\nArianna Economou wishes to thank Jacqui MacIntosh for her inspiring talk at NIMAC\, Elena Parpa and Ruth Keshishian\, for their valuable assistance with research material on Ithell Colquhoun.  \n\nProduction: Echo Arts / Culture 2024 / Deputy Ministry of Culture   \nTickets\n\n\n£12/10 concession\nBooking via Eventbrite or 020 7487 5060

SUMMARY:Photographer John Donat in 1960s Crete
DESCRIPTION:Travelling to Crete after completing his studies at the Architectural Association\, John Donat found on the island the inspiration to redirect his career from architecture to photography – as he put it\, Crete set him free. Initially attracted by the prospect of recording the outstanding byzantine frescoes of the local churches\, Donat soon also turned his attention to the landscape and the towns’ streetscape. He became fascinated by all aspects of life on the island\, from the many traditional crafts to the religious festivities. It is indeed in Crete that he started to explore the theme that would become the leitmotif of his work\, the relationship between buildings and the people who inhabit them. Donat was to become one of the foremost British architectural photographers of his generation by capturing the built environment with a social documentary\, almost photojournalistic approach. He always valued his experience in Crete and\, many years later\, he managed to publish his beautiful images of the island in the book Crete 1960 (Crete University Press\, 1999) and display them at the Hellenic Centre in The Real Crete exhibition (2001). \n\nValeria Carullo\, Photographs Curator at the Royal Institute of British Architects\, presents Donat’s work. SUMMARY:The Music of Asia Minor: Presenting Violin Legends Semsis & Ogdontakis
DESCRIPTION:In this year’s Rebetiko Carnival\, violonist Kyriakos Gouventas and a group of brilliant musicians present the work of master violinists Dimitris Semsis (Salonikios) and Ioannis Dragatsis (Ogdontakis). Reviving the precious music of Santourovioli\, the combination of violin\, santur and guitar\, this evening will introduce you to the early rebetiko music of Asia Minor. \n\nDuring the great population movement in the southern Balkans in the early 20th century\, seminal artists from Constantinople\, Smyrna and the coasts of Asia Minor settled on the Greek islands and ports. Among them\, great music masters such as Dimitris Semsis (Salonikios) and Ioannis Dragatsis (Ogdontakis) came to Greece\, bringing along their sound and becoming leading figures in the local music scene.  \n\nTheir captivating performances and recordings made them legendary figures in the history of world music. The main instruments in Early Rebetika are violin\, santur\, guitar\, kanun\, oud and tampoura. Santurovioli is a minimal combination of violin\, santur and guitar. These three form an impressively functional musical system where the microtonal use of the violin shines brightly in the rich harmonics of the santur over a solid bass-guitar rhythmical background. Speakers are Dr Afroditi Koulaxi\, LSE 100 Fellow at the London School of Economics\, Ioanna Gkoutna\, PhD Candidate at University College London\, Dr Charoula Tzanakou\, Director of CDPRP and Reader in Human Resource Management at Oxford Brookes Business School and Dr Sophie Chamas\, Senior Lecturer in Gender Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies.\n\nScholars will present research findings\, offer diverse perspectives\, and discuss the systemic factors that underpin gender-based violence in the country. DESCRIPTION:The Divided Island brings the Cyprus issue into sharp focus\, attempting an objective perspective on this complex and long-standing conflict. With Nicosia remaining Europe’s last divided capital\, the documentary explores the aftermath of the 1974 conflict\, which left the North predominantly inhabited by Turkish Cypriots and the South by Greek Cypriots. After 50 years of stalled negotiations\, the question remains: will the island ever reunite?  \nAmid the ongoing wars against Ukraine and Palestine\, the frozen divide in Cyprus has often been forgotten. The Divided Island challenges the hostile narratives commonly seen in mainstream media\, instead seeking the truth through deeply personal interviews with those whose lives\, homes\, and country were torn apart\, alongside the voices of young Cypriots yearning for  reconciliation.  \nThis debut feature documentary is directed by Turkish Cypriot Cey Sesiguzel and co-produced by Greek Cypriot Andreas Tokkallos\, the founders of the award-winning London-based production company\, Two Fresh Productions. DESCRIPTION:Choreographer Eliane Roumié presents 25km\, a site-specific project inspired by the Eleusinian Mysteries and the city of Eleusis. At the heart of this work is the integration of walking as a ritual\, inviting reflection on the profound shifts in contemporary life. From the refugee crisis to the loss of nature and social isolation\, Roumié explores the emotional and social landscapes that shape our world today. \n\nBorn and raised in Athens\, Roumié is an artist of Greek and Syrian descent. Drawing from her dual heritage\, she often finds herself in a state of ‘in-between\,’ where themes of transition and identity serve as key sources of inspiration. In 25km\, she reflects on these shifts in contemporary life through the lens of ritual. Using a collective\, long-duration walk as a primary means of exploration\, the project connects the ancient ritual of the Eleusinian Mysteries with urgent contemporary issues. \n\nIn 25km\, four women embark on a silent\, 25-kilometer journey\, retracing the steps of the Ancient Greeks in search of new personal and collective meanings. The project delves into the profound experience of walking\, investigating how this ritualistic act can be translated into dance.
