SUMMARY:Czech Documentary Now: The Other One
DESCRIPTION:Marie-Magdalena Kochová’s debut portrays 18-year-old Johana’s internal struggle between her dreams and her duty to her family\, highlighting her silent self-sacrifice and the overwhelming weight of living for others. \nEighteen-year-old Johana has always been the dependable one—the quiet anchor in a family consumed by caring for her younger sister\, Rósa\, who has severe autism. As she nears high school graduation\, Johana faces an impossible choice: remain in her small Czech hometown to help her overburdened parents\, or finally step out of the shadows to study psychology and build a life of her own. \nIn her poignant feature debut\, director Marie-Magdalena Kochová crafts an intimate\, unflinching portrait of a so-called “glass child”—a sibling rendered nearly invisible by the needs of another. Through quiet observations and close-ups that reveal volumes in a single glance\, The Other One captures the silent struggle between love and self-preservation\, duty and identity. \nWinner of the MDR Film Prize for Outstanding Eastern European Documentary at DOK Leipzig 2024\, the film sheds light on the hidden toll of caregiving on young people\, offering a voice to everyone who has ever felt unseen. The Other One is not merely a coming-of-age story; it is a powerful testament to the courage it takes to choose yourself. \nDir. Marie-Magdalena Kochová\, Czech Republic\, Slovakia\, 87 min\, 2024\, Eng. subt.   \n\nAdmission: 5 (+ Eventbrite fee)\nBook here:https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/czech-documentary-now-the-other-one-tickets-1550514463499?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:Design and Transformations: An Outdoor Photographic Exhibition by Vojtech Veskrna
DESCRIPTION:This outdoor exhibition by photographer Vojtěch Veškrna complements Design and Transformation. Stories of Czech Design 1990–2020\, on view at the Czech Centre’s Bouda Gallery. Installed in the public space outside the Czech Embassy\, the series offers a visually rich\, behind-the-scenes look into twelve Czech companies where design plays a central role in shaping both products and identity. \nVeškrna’s photographs move beyond polished final outcomes to focus on the environments\, materials\, and people that define contemporary Czech design. His lens captures the quiet rhythms of daily production\, the tactile beauty of traditional techniques\, and the innovation driving forward-thinking industries—from porcelain workshops and textile printers to medical technology and game development studios. This body of work reveals design as a living process—deeply rooted in craft\, constantly evolving\, and inseparable from the cultural and industrial landscape it inhabits. \nCoorganised by the Czech Centre London and the Academy of Arts\, Architecture and Design in Prague UMPRUM. Supported by the Moravian Gallery Brno. \nFoto Vojtěch Veškrna\, Mmcité \nOutdoor exhibition on the fence of the Czech Embassy\n26 – 30 Kensington Palace Gardens\, London W8 4QY\nFree access 24/7

SUMMARY:The Embrace as a Symbol of Closeness
DESCRIPTION:An Exhibition of posters from the 59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival \n\nThe Karlovy Vary International Film Festival\, founded in 1946\, is one of the oldest film festivals in the world and the most important cinematic event in Central Europe. Every year\, the picturesque West Bohemian spa town of Karlovy Vary hosts hundreds of filmmakers from around the world while offering audiences the chance to see more than 200 films\, including world premieres in the festival’s official selection and other programme sections. The festival regularly welcomes some of the biggest stars of international cinema.\n\nAlthough KVIFF is a prestigious Category A festival\, it stands out for its open and friendly atmosphere\, which makes it exceptionally welcoming to ordinary filmgoers. This unique spirit is often reflected in the festival’s visual identity\, which has been exclusively designed by Prague-based Studio Najbrt since 1995. Each year\, this renowned Czech design studio gives the festival’s visuals a new and original form and a clear theme.\n\nThe symbol of the festival’s 59th edition is closeness\, represented by the simplest yet most eloquent of human gestures – the embrace.\n\nKVIFF 59 will take place in Karlovy Vary from 4 to 12 July 2025\n\nAuthor of visual identity: Zuzana Lednická \nIn collaboration with: Aleš Najbrt \nPhotographer: Václav Jirásek  \n\nOutdoor exhibition on the fence of the Czech Embassy\n26 – 30 Kensington Palace Gardens\, London W8 4QY\nFree access 24/7\n\nThis exhibition is part of From Karlovy Vary\, With Art\, the Czech Centre’s series celebrating the cultural legacy and creative spirit of Karlovy Vary through contemporary art\, design and cinema — including the tribute screening Jiří Bartoška In Memoriam: Shadows of a Hot Summer (1 July) and the group exhibition They All Met in Karlsbad\, on view at the Vitrínka Gallery from 11 July.
