MY DEAR ELEKTRA is inspired by the journey of British surrealist artist, writer and occultist Ithell Colquhoun (1906–1988) to Cyprus. She arrived in the summer of 1951 to visit her friend and fellow artist from her days at the Slade School of Art, Elektra Megaw (1907 – 1993) and her husband Peter, the then Director of the Department of Antiquities.
In this performance, Economou attempts a parallel journey in search of sacred landscapes and the divine feminine, across the terrain of the island of Cyprus, trying to map out the journey and possible places Megaw and Colquhoun could have visited.
The performance is built on seven imaginary letters written by Arianna Economou addressed to Elektra Megaw, where she accounts the experiences, memories and reflections, that came up during her visits to Cyprus, in relation to the bigger oeuvre of Colquhoun.
Economou met Elektra Megaw through their common friend, ceramicist Lionel Miskin.
The performance is inspired by the artworks Colquhoun made with Cyprus as stimulus.
